Lesley Athletics 2011 Year in Review

With four teams competing in NCAA Tournament play and three others opening inaugural seasons as NCAA sports, here's a look at one of the most successful years in the history of the Lynx in our 2011 Year in Review.

January 15, 2011
Seniors lead way as Lynx keep hold of first place
Brianne Caira and Kaitlyn Wechsler each enjoyed career games, with Caira finishing one block shy of a triple-double and Wechsler tossing in a career-high 32 points to go along with 15 rebounds in a 77-59 win over Southern Vermont.

Convincing win keeps Lynx atop NECC, 62-50 over Mitchell
Kaitlyn Wechsler scored 21 points, and Brianne Caira posted 11 points and 12 rebounds. Cassidy Freed and Rachael O’Mara each turned in 11 points and 11 rebounds as Lesley topped the Mariners to stay in first place at 7-0 in the NECC.

Freshmen spark Lynx men to first NECC win
Christian Fuentes responded to his first career start with three straight three-pointers, and Kris Bennett provided the second-half sparks with a pair of monster jams as the Lynx cruised to their first NECC win, 73-61 over Mitchell.

Wechsler's record night lifts Lynx at Rivier
Kaitlyn Wechsler tied Lesley's single-game scoring record with 33 points in Lesley's 75-69 victory at Rivier, shattering Lesley's single-game free throw record in the process by hitting 15 at the stripe.

Wechsler's historic run earns NECC Player of the Week
After averaging 26 points per game over the first-place Lynx 4-0 week and setting a pair of program records, senior Kaitlyn Wechsler was named NECC Player of the Week.

Lesley sends 24 students to NECC All-Academic Team
A total of 24 Lesley men's and women's fall student-athletes from four teams have been named to the NECC Academic All-Conference Team. Lesley women's soccer, women's cross country and women's volleyball teams all led or tied for the conference lead in representatives from their respective sports.

Lynx keep playoff hope afloat; Sanchez sets FT mark
John Sanchez converted on 17 free throws on 19 attempts, both Lesley records, as the Lynx kept their hopes playoff hopes alive in an 84-77 victory at Mitchell. Sanchez posted game-highs of 21 points and eight assists.

O'Mara's career night leads Lynx over Plymouth State
Rachael O'Mara scored a career-high 32 points, helping Lesley open a 40-20 halftime lead as the Lynx knocked off Little East Conference foe Plymouth State Thursday night. Kaitlyn Wechsler added 13 points and 13 rebounds as Lesley won a third straight.

Senior Rachael O'Mara led the Lynx with 30 points and 10 rebounds as Lesley clinched first place in the NECC with a 62-49 come-from-behind victory over Daniel Webster.

Following consecutive 30-point outings in a week in which she shot 65 percent from three-point range over three Lynx wins, red-hot forward Rachael O'Mara has been named NECC Player of the Week.

Rachael O'Mara's third consecutive 30-point outing, a 20-point effort from Kaitlyn Wechsler and Brianne Caira's 11th double-double landed the seniors in their third straight NECC title game.

Lynx fall short of title as Wechsler sets scoring record
Kaitlyn Wechsler set the Lesley all-time scoring mark of 1,471 points, but the Lynx fell short of a third straight NECC Championship, falling 64-52 to Daniel Webster. The senior finished with a game-high 22 points.

John Sanchez was named All-NECC First Team, as the 5-8 guard led the league in assists while also finishing third in scoring. Center Jesus Trejo was named All-NECC Honorable Mention.

Kaitlyn Wechsler was named to the All-NECC First Team, the league announced this afternoon. Fellow seniors Brianne Caira and Rachael O'Mara made All-NECC Second Team.

Gonzalez and Shaw named baseball captains
Five days before the first game in Lesley baseball history, Lynx players have chosen catcher Jeff Gonzalez and pitcher Noah Shaw as team co-captains, head coach Mike Rocco announced today.

A day of firsts on Opening Day for Lynx baseball
In the first games in program history, Lesley dropped a doubleheader to Colby-Sawyer, 10-1 and 3-0. Noah Shaw drove in the only Lynx run in Game 1 and threw a complete-game three-hitter in the night cap.

Dorval dominates as Lynx pick up first win
Freshman starter Jenn Dorval shut Penn State Behrend down over five shutout innings, limiting the Lions to two hits and striking out eight in the Lynx 9-0 win. Emily Mangiaratti went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and two RBIs.

Wechsler first NECC player sent to NEWBA Senior Classic
After leading the NECC in scoring and becoming the Lynx all-time leading scorer, Kaitlyn Wechsler has become the first NECC player ever selected to the NEWBA Senior Classic, and annual all-star game that rounds up the region's finest seniors.

Trejo enjoys workout with Celtics NBDL staff
Lesley's Jesus Trejo took the first step towards playing at the next level when he participated in a private workout with the staff of the Maine Red Claws, the NBA D-League affiliate of the Boston Celtics and Charlotte Bobcats.

Lynx top Regis on Reeves' record-setting senior night
Tyler Reeves set the Lesley all-time digs record, leading all players with 16, and the Lynx hit a season-high .364 as a team in a 3-0 win over visiting Regis on senior night in Cambridge.

Outside hitter William Lau has been named All-NECC Honorable Mention after an outstanding freshman season in which he ranked among the team leaders in almost every statistical category.

No can do: Knox no-hitter leads Lesley sweep of Becker
Cassandra Knox's no-hitter led Lesley's doubleheader sweep of Becker College on Saturday in Cambridge, as the Lynx topped the Hawks 8-0 and 10-2. Lesley won for a seventh straight and ninth in 10 games.

Apgar crushes two grand slams as Lynx rout Newbury
Sarah Apgar crushed a pair of grand slams in the second inning of Game 2, and fellow freshman Jenn Dorval went a combined 7-for-8 with five runs scored and four RBIs in a pair of five-inning wins for the Lynx, 17-1 and 19-0 over Newbury.

Lynx Brixey, Knox, Apgar earn NECC weekly awards
Outfielder Gaby Brixey was named NECC Player of the Week, starter Cassandra Knox notched the league's Pitcher of the Week award for a second straight week, and shortstop Sarah Apgar's power surge earned Rookie of the Week honors.

Lesley's first-place men's tennis team improved to 9-0 on the season with a 9-0 win over Wheelock Monday night. In his first time in the fifth singles slot, senior Beau Morimando was victorious, 6-2, 6-3.

Lynx named NECC co-champs after loss at Mitchell
Lesley and Mitchell will share the NECC regular season crown after the Mariners 8-1 win over the visiting Lynx Wednesday night. Christian Domingo earned Lesley's lone win, beating Andrew Small, 6-2, 6-3.

Knox throws one-hitter in Game 1, earns save in Game 2
Cassandra Knox tossed a one-hit shutout in Lesley's 8-0 Game 1 win at Mitchell and pitched fellow starter Jenn Dorval out of a seventh-inning pickle in their team's 4-2 Game 2 victory, the 14th straight for the first-place Lynx.

Senior day sweep caps undefeated NECC finish
Cassandra Knox pitched her third no-hitter of the month of April, this time combining with Nicole Mercurio on the no-no. Alyson Durben went 4-for-7 on her Senior Day, including this stand-up triple in the first inning of Game 1, as Lesley finished NECC play 16-0 by winning its record 16th straight.

Domingo wins NECC fifth singles title
Lesley's Christian Domingo won the New England Collegiate Conference fifth singles title on Sunday, beating Mitchell College's Andrew Small, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

DiPietrantonio Rookie of the Year; four Lynx to All-NECC
Lesley freshman Paolo DiPietrantonio has been named New England Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Year, the league announced today. Additionally, four Lynx players received All-NECC First Team honors.

Tourney-bound: Lynx head back to NCAA Tournament with fourth straight championship, 3-1 over Elms
Lesley earned its fourth league title in a row with a 3-1 win over Elms College in Saturday's NECC Championship. Cassandra Knox pitched the Lynx to victory for a second straight NECC title game, throwing a complete-game three hitter while Alyson Durben's two-run double proved to be the difference-maker.

Lesley fell short in its upset bid of nationally-ranked Coast Guard, losing to the No. 6 team in the nation in a wild contest in Providence. Jenn Dorval pitched solid in relief, catcher Molly Sarson went 1-for-3 with a run, and Nicole Mercurio added an RBI single.

Late comeback falls short as Lynx succumb to Gulls, 4-2
Lesley's seventh-inning, two-out comeback fell short Friday, as the No. 7 Lynx lost to No. 3 Endicott College in NCAA Tournament play, 4-2. Lesley finishes its season 29-7 after a 16-0 record in league play and the program's second-ever NCAA Tournament appearance.

Three Lynx players named to NFCA All-New England Teams
After the most successful season in Lynx softball history, three Lesley University players have been honored by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association in being named to the NFCA's All-New England teams, the top regional honor.

Lesley women's soccer and softball all-star Alyson Durben has been named NECC Female Student-Athlete of the Year, an honor the league reserves for its top graduating senior based on a career of outstanding athletic, academic and community accomplishments.

Women's teams win third straight NECC Champions Cup
For a third consecutive year, Lesley University's women's athletics teams captured the NECC's Champion's Cup, the league's sport-wide winnings leader board. Three of Lesley's six women's teams won NECC titles, with two more making the NECC championship game.

NCAA honors Mangiaratti as national runs leader
The NCAA has announced that Lesley leadoff hitter Emily Mangiaratti led all players in the nation in runs per game in 2011. The sophomore averaged 1.42 runs per game in leading the Lynx to the NCAA Tournament.

Former Boston University and Emmanuel College player and Mount Ida College assistant coach Leah Lipschitz was named the fifth women's basketball head coach in Lesley history.

With sole possession of first place in the balance, Jenna Fralick tied a Lesley record with three assists and Veronica Halen scored her league-leading 13th and 14th goals of the year in leading the Lynx to 5-0 in NECC play with a 5-0 win over Becker.

Leah Miller finished first out of 162 runners with a time of 19:39 in leading the Lynx women to a first place finish out of 17 teams at Friday's Saints Invitational. The Lynx men finished 3rd out of 16 teams.

For a third time in four years, Lesley will return to the NECC Championship, this time with a trip to the NCAA Tournament at stake. Ari Sinanis' second half penalty kick snapped a 1-1 tie and was the eventual game-winner.

The men's and women's indoor track and field teams competed in their first meet as NCAA programs at the Jay Carisella Track & Field Invitational at Boston's Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center.

Lok-Tin Yao was officially named new Lesley men's volleyball coach. Yao enters with a track record of success as an assistant at Wheaton and Emerson.

After a career year as a senior, Lesley forward Jenna Fralick has become the first Lynx women's player ever named to an NSCAA all-star team.

Lesley men's soccer sent a program-record three players to the NSCAA Division III All-New England North Team in Christian Domingo, Ari Sinanis and Ali Sozeri.
