Knox throws one-hitter in Game 1, earns save in Game 2

NEW LONDON, CT -- Cassandra Knox tossed a one-hit shutout in Lesley's 8-0 Game 1 win at Mitchell and pitched fellow starter Jennifer Dorval out of a seventh-inning pickle in their team's 4-2 Game 2 victory, the 14th straight for the first-place Lynx.

The victories up the Lynx winning streak to 14, a program record, and improve the team to 14-0 in NECC play.

Knox improved to 11-4 on the year with her six-inning shutout in the opener, coming within an out of her third no-hitter of the month, giving up only a two-out single in the sixth. She struck out seven and walked three in picking up her sixth shutout of the year.

Offensively, Emily Mangiaratti set the table in going 3-for-3 with a walk and three runs scored, and Alyson Durben provided the power, going 3-for-4 with three doubles, two RBIs and a run scored. In her second career start at second base, freshman Nicole Mercurio went 2-for-4 with and RBI.

Dorval was solid through six innings in the nightcap, but ran into trouble in the seventh. With Lesley ahead 4-1 entering the final frame, four Mitchell singles and a hit batter made it a 4-2 game with the bases loaded and only one out.

Enter Knox. The 2010 NECC Pitcher of the Year supplied a strikeout and a ground out to work out of the bases-loaded jam in earning her first career save and Dorval her league-leading 12th win of the year. Dorval was magnificent before tiring down the stretch, striking out a career-high 14 and allowing two runs of five hits, three of which came in the seventh.

Mangiaratti went 1-for-1 with one run and three walks in Game 2, as the Lynx designated player reached base in all eight plate appearances on the day. Dorval went 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Lesley improves to 24-6 on the year, while Mitchell falls to 13-17, 10-6 in the NECC.

The Lynx will honor seniors Durben, Ashley Cunningham and Chelsea Quackenbush following tomorrow's Senior Day games against Daniel Webster at 2:00 p.m.
