Apgar crushes two grand slams as Lynx rout Newbury

CHESTNUT HILL, MA -- The Lynx offense continued its tear through the New England Collegiate Conference as Lesley scored a pair of five-inning road wins over Newbury Saturday afternoon, 17-0 and 19-1.

Sarah Apgar enjoyed a career day, crushing a pair of grand slams in the second inning of Game 2. Fellow freshman Jennifer Dorval stayed sizzling at the plate, going a combined 7-for-8 with five runs scored and four RBIs on the day.

Game 1 starter Cassandra Knox, who threw a no-hitter against Becker a week ago and hurled four one-hit innings against Southern Vermont in her last start, allowed only two hits in her shutout of the Nighthawks. This week's NECC Pitcher of the Week earned 11 of 15 her outs via strickout, facing only 18 batters on the afternoon.

Jenna Fralick went 4-for-4 in the opener, scoring twice and driving in three, and Dorval, who went 6-for-7 with eight RBIs a game prior versus Southern Vermont, went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs.

She earned the win in Game 2, allowing a run in two innings, over which she fanned four. The reigning NECC Freshman of the Week was relieved by another white-hot frosh, Nicole Mercurio, who followed up a 5-for-5 game in which she threw a shutout with three scoreless innings on Saturday.

Neither Dorval nor Mercurio was the story of Game 2, though, as it was classmate Sarah Apgar whose power breakout stole the show. The Lynx shortstop, who entered the day with a .302 slugging percentage as the team's No. 7 hitter, ended the day tied for the team lead in home runs, smacking grand slams in consecutive at-bats in Lesley's 17-run second inning.

Now 15-6 and 6-0 in NECC play, Lesley returns to play on Sunday at noon at Bay Path.
