CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The No. 2 seeded Lesley University women's soccer team looks to keep the momentum going after Saturday's thrilling victory in a penalty shootout over No.3 seeded Maine Maritime when the Lynx meet up with the No. 1 seeded Husson University Eagles on Sunday, November 3 at 1 p.m. in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) semifinals.
Five Things To Know
- Sunday's matchup marks the first NAC postseason matchup between the two schools.
- Overall, Husson is 6-2 against Lesley, but the Lynx have won two of the last three matchups.
- Husson comes into Sunday on a six-game win streak and has outscored their opponents 49-9.
- Coming into Sunday, Husson leads the conference in goals per game (3.56), whereas Lesley leads the conference in goals allowed per game (1.05).
- In all eight of their matchups, only two have been decided by one goal.
Who To Watch For
- Abby Kalou (Chicago, Ill.) showed why she's a pivotal factor in the Lesely offense on Saturday when the senior scored the game-tying goal. In her two games against the Eagles this year, Kalou netted one goal, and in her career versus Husson, she has two goals and is 2-1-0 overall. If Kalou can find the back of the net for Lesley, the Lynx are in good hands as the team is an impressive 9-0-0.
- Lesley's high-powered offense showed its versatility on Saturday as junior defender Rachel Weinzimer (Woodland Hills, Calif.) scored her first goal of the year. She is now one of 12 Lynx to find the back of the net this year and is one of four defenders to score this year, too.
- Defensively, the Lynx showed why they have two of the better goalies in the NAC on Saturday between Lauren Lacy (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Madison Reed (Burlingame, Calif.). Lacy got the start in Saturday's win and finished with four saves. However, during penalty kicks, Reed stepped in the net and made a crucial stop that allowed Lesley to seal the game-winner. In her career against Husson, Lacy is 1-1-0, has made six saves, and has allowed an average of 1.5 goals. Meanwhile, Reed has only taken on the Eagles once, but in her one game, she helped Lesley earn a 2-1 win, along with making four stops.
- For the Eagles, they will look upon Kate Harriman, who led the team with 15 goals. Harriman is currently second in the conference in goals and fourth in points (31). On Saturday, she played a key factor for Husson as she netted a hat trick in an 8-0 win over UMaine Farmington. Whenever Harriman scored for Husson this year, the Eagles went 7-1-0; in those games, four were hat tricks. In her career, Harriman has netted 30 goals.
- Along with Harriman, Husson has another double-digit goal scorer, Natalie Aviolla. Aviolla finished the year with 10 goals, and two of those contests were multi-goal games. Aviolla is not far behind Harriman in the conference rankings for goals at fourth and in terms of points, she is also fourth (35).
- Madison Weigler had a strong year for the Eagles in net. The junior netminder finished with an 8-5-1 record, made 31 stops, and allowed an average of 1.85 goals per game. Not many shots got past Weigler, as she finished with four clean slates this season, which is second in the NAC. Weigler is also in the top 10 in goals against average (fourth) and saves (31-10th).
What's Next
Sunday's winner will secure home-field advantage in the NAC Championship, hosting the West Division champion on Saturday, November 9, at a time to be determined later.
