THE LEAD – Lesley University dropped a 3-0 decision to No. 11 Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on Saturday afternoon in NCAA Division III women's soccer action at Roberts Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Lynx kept the Engineers off the board for nearly 25 minutes before the hosts connected on the eventual game-winner following a foul just outside the box which resulted in a direct free-kick. Sean Luk made Lesley pay, finding the back of the net on the kick to give MIT the lead for good at 1-0.
  • Lesley battled the remainder of the half to keep it a one-goal game heading into halftime as junior goalie Madison Reed (Burlingame, Calif.) made six first-half saves.
  • The Engineers came out fast in the second stanza, doubling the lead to 2-0 just 1:52 into the second half on Luk's second goal of the action. Natalie Barnouw sent a cross in from the left side to find Luk for the finish at the 46:52 marker.
  • Emiko Pope capped the scoring minutes later as Luk set it up with a cross from the left flank to the top of the box allowing Pope to redirect the ball into the right side of the net for the final goal in the 3-0 final during the 52nd minute of play.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • MIT held a 24-1 advantage in shots in the victory as first year Elsie Koehler (Portland, Ore.) landed the lone LU shot attempt on frame in the setback.
  • Lesley attempted a pair of corners compared to five by the Engineers.
  • Luk finished the day with five points on two goals and one assist.
  • Through three games, MIT has not allowed a goal and outshot its opponents by a 76-17 margin.
  • Reed (0-1) finished the game with 11 saves, a new career-high, in her first appearance of the 2024 campaign.
  • Ava Muffoletto and Maddy Noll split duties for the Engineers to combine for the shutout with Noll making one stop in the final 31 minutes of action while Muffoletto (1-0) earned the win.
