Lynx knock off Newbury to secure perfect NECC season

CAMBRIDGE, MA -- Lesley University topped Newbury College, 2-0, in women's soccer play Sunday afternoon on a snowy Edward Field, completing a perfect 9-0 campaign through the New England Collegiate Conference for the Lynx.

Lesley (13-3-1, 9-0 NECC) jumped out to an early lead thanks to Veronica Halen (San Diego, CA/Cathedral Catholic), who scored both Lynx goals, never to look back in locking up a first-place finish. Halen's first score came on an assist from Jenna Fralick (Woburn, MA/Woburn) at 14:38, and the second came on a feed from Jackee Sanchez's (Santa Clarita, CA/Golden Valley) eighth assist of the season at 35:08.

Lesley outshot Newbury (8-5-1, 5-2-1 NECC) 8-0 through halftime and 9-1 in the second half. For the Nighthawks, Rachel Wyszynski (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug) made six saves in net.

With her two goals, Halen ties Newbury's Briana Tomaselli (Warwick, RI/Pilgrim) with 18 to share the NECC regular season crown. Fralick celebrated her senior day with her team-leading and career-high 11th assist of the year.

The teams now prepare for the NECC Tournament, with the No. 1-seed Lynx securing a first round bye. No. 5 Newbury will travel to No. 4 Becker on Tuesday at 6 p.m. with the winner traveling to Lesley Thursday night at 8:15.
