CAMBRIDGE, MA – Castleton State topped Lesley University, 4-2, Saturday afternoon thanks to a Courtney Chadburn (North Clarendon, VT/Mill River Union) hat trick that allowed the Spartans to overcome an early 2-0 deficit for a second straight win to start 2011.
The Lynx struck just 31 seconds into the contest, as Veronica Halen (San Diego, CA/Cathedral Catholic) took a through ball from Katherine Bradley (Colchester, CT/Bacon Academy) and sent it past Spartans keeper Katja Langmaid, putting the Lynx on top 1-0 just moments off the opening whistle.
Lesley jumped ahead 2-0 before the 7:00 mark. Halen's cross was met by a Jenna Fralick (Woburn, MA/Woburn) header that beat Langmaid to her right and lifted the Lynx to a 2-0 lead.
This is a modal window.
A sleeping giant for the first 7:00 of the contest, Chadburn's Spartans woke upon Lesley's second score. The senior forward's chip at 7:24 beat Lynx keeper Emileigh Lloyd from just outside the 18. Under two minutes later, at 9:10, Chadburn's corner kick was sent home by Hilary Cooke (Marlborough, CT/RHAM), tying the match at 2-2.
After a combined four goals in the first 9:10, the teams went scoreless into halftime and went over 60 minutes without scoring. Corrine Dasti (Eastham, MA/Nauset) replaced Lloyd in net, but ventured too far out of position on a beautifully-placed Chadburn chip shot that sailed into the top right corner of the net from 35 yards at 72:49.
Chadburn completed her hat trick with an insurance goal less than a minute later. She took a Jenna Bostwick (Pembroke, MA/Pembroke) throw-in and scored her third of the day and fourth in two matches, putting the Spartans on top for good, 4-2.
For the second time in two 4-2 losses to start 2011, Lesley outshot its opponent, this time earning an 11-7 advantage in shots.
The Lynx (0-2-0) return to action Sunday at noon, playing host to Mount Ida, while Castleton State (2-0-0) visits Johnson & Wales on Sunday.
