THE LEAD -  The Lesley University women's basketball team closed out North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play with a tough loss to VTSU Lyndon Tuesday by a score of 49-45.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the first quarter, both sides played each other evenly throughout the opening frame. After the Hornets jumped out to an early 10-7 lead, Lesley pulled back ahead (11-10) with a 4-0 surge thanks to back-to-back layups from Bella Terry (El Cajon, Calif.). However, for the rest of the quarter, each squad played tightly and would go into the second quarter tied at 12.
  • As the second quarter got underway, it was more of the same from the first. With 8:20 left until halftime, Madalynn Biagi (Lincoln, Calif.) gave the Lynx their first lead of the second (17-16) after she knocked down a jumper. Despite the one-point lead, VTSU Lyndon pulled back ahead by four (20-16) which led to a Lesley timeout.
  • Coming out of the break, the Hornets continued their late momentum and grew their lead to eight (26-18) after Sage Smith hit a layup with 2:07 remaining until halftime. For the remainder of the quarter, VTSU Lyndon's defense held strong, and the visitors went into halftime up 26-20.
  • In the third, VTSU Lyndon grabbed an early seven-point lead (31-24) thanks to a Kadienne Whitcomb three-pointer. Even with the large lead, Lesley clawed its way back and recaptured the lead (34-31) courtesy of a 10-3 rally and caused the Hornets to call timeout. Leila Chisholm (Santa Barbara, Calif.) spearheaded the run with six points highlighted by back-to-back threes.
  • Going into the fourth, Lesley took its 34-31 lead and grew it to four (37-33) after a Terry layup, leading to a Lynx timeout with 7:35 left to play. However, VTSU Lyndon would not go quietly and retook the lead (43-39) thanks to a 6-2 stretch, causing the Lynx to take a timeout with 3:34 left to play. Sage Smith led the late Hornets run with four points.
  • After the break, Lesley pulled within one (45-44) after Mariana Richwine (Buckeye, Ariz.) knocked down a crucial three, forcing VTSU Lyndon to call a timeout with 39 seconds left to play. The Hornets would go on to knock down two more free throws for a 47-44 advantage, but with two seconds left, the Lynx had a chance to tie the game with three free throws but unfortunately would go 1-3 from the line and ultimately fall 49-45.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Lesley's other double-figure scorer was Biagi, who finished with 11 points on 5-8 shooting, which tied her season-high.
  • Biagi also guided the Lynx offense Tuesday with six assists. She has finished at least five assists in eight games this year.
