THE LEAD – The Lesley University women's basketball team concluded its road portion of the schedule with a matchup at VTSU Lyndon but fell 71-51 on Friday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the opening moments of the first quarter, both sides played back-and-forth basketball. After two Ella Huntington free throws gave the Hornets a four-point lead (9-5), Lesley quickly evened things at nine thanks to an Ahidali DeHuelbes (Tucson, Ariz.) and two Bella Terry (El Cajon, Calif.) free throws with 3:23 left in the quarter. However, the hosts closed out the opening frame with a 10-0 run and took a 19-9 lead going into the second. Huntington led the Hornet's run at the end of the quarter, scoring four of the 10 Lyndon points.
  • As the second quarter got underway, it was more of the same from the Hornets, as the closest they let the Lynx get was six (24-18) when Madalynn Biagi (Lincoln, Calif.) knocked down a jumper with 6:17 left until halftime. From then on, Lyndon kept Lesley at bay and ended the quarter outscoring Lesley 12-7 and took a 36-25 advantage at halftime.
  • Shortly into the third, after Lyndon scored the first four points, Lesley stopped the momentum when Leila Chisholm (Santa Barbara, Calif.) hit a three-pointer, which led to a Lynx timeout. Coming out of the break, Lesley made it a nine-point game (44-35) thanks to a 7-4 rally led by three points from Terry. Unfortunately, the Hornets held off any Lynx rally for the remainder of the third and pushed their lead back to 10 (49-39) going into the fourth.
  • In the final quarter, it was all Lyndon as the hosts utilized a 16-5 surge of offense to grab its first 20-point lead of the night (65-44) after Sage Smith hit a three with 3:32 left to play. From then on, the Hornets closed out the remainder of the contest behind its offense and secured a 71-51 win.
