THE LEAD – Despite the Lesley University women's basketball team being down eight at halftime to the defending North Atlantic Conference champions, the Lynx ultimately fell to Maine Maritime Academy 76-58 Friday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Maine Maritime's offense started quickly as the visitors opened the game on a 5-0 run before Savannah Gravitt (Richmond Hill, Ga.) knocked down a three to break up the Mariners' momentum.
- Later in the quarter, after Bella Terry (El Cajon, Calif.) hit a layup to cut the Lynx deficit to four (12-8), the Mariners pulled away in the quarter thanks to an 8-3 spurt for a nine-point advantage (20-11) before Lesley called a timeout. During Maine Maritime's offensive stretch, both Evelyn Dagan and Grace Huntwork each knocked down three-pointers for the Mariners.
- Going into the second quarter, Maine Maritime held a 25-13 lead, but Lesley cut the hosts' lead down to three (27-24) behind an 11-2 rally, which led to a Maine Maritime timeout. Leila Chisholm (Santa Barbara, Calif.) spearheaded the rally thanks to five points, including a made three.
- Coming out of the break, Maine Maritime responded with a Makenzie Monzon layup, but Lesley again pulled within three (29-26) after Gravitt hit two free throws. Despite pulling within three, the Mariners closed the half on a 6-1 run for a 35-27 halftime lead.
- As the third quarter got underway, the Mariner's offense got back on track and went on a 15-3 run to open the quarter for a 20-point advantage (50-30) before calling a timeout with 4:32 left in the frame. Hailey Blanchard led Maine Maritime's offense with seven points during the burst. For the rest of the third, the Mariners would not let the Lynx get closer than 14 and took a 55-38 lead into the fourth.
- In the fourth, the Mariners' offense continued their momentum and even reached their largest lead of the night at 4:51, when Sydney Briscoe made a layup that made it 70-46, leading to a Lesley timeout. After the timeout, the Lynx outscored Maine Maritime 12-6, but it was still not enough, as the Mariners earned a 76-58 win.
