THE LEAD – In what was the program's largest margin of victory since 2019 (Jan. 15, 2019, vs. Bay Path University), the Lesley University women's basketball team kicked off North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play with a dominant 76-45 triumph over SUNY Delhi Friday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the first quarter, both sides traded baskets and played strong defense. With the score tied at 10 with 5:02 left in the first, Lesley gave itself some breathing room thanks to a 6-0 spurt with three different Lynx scoring during that stretch for a 16-10 advantage. However, SUNY Delhi pulled within two under a minute left in the opening quarter when Eleanor Wagner knocked down a jumper with 50 seconds left in the frame.
- However, in the second quarter, Lesley's offense caught fire and grabbed its first double-digit lead (30-18) courtesy of a 14-8 run. During the burst of offense, Savannah Gravitt (Richmond Hill, Ga.) spearheaded the run with seven points, including two made threes. From then on, the Lynx closed out the rest of the quarter outscoring the Broncos 9-4 for a 39-22 halftime lead.
- The third quarter was more of the same for the Lynx as the squad pushed their lead to 21 (51-30) before the Broncos called a timeout. Prior to the timeout, Ahidali DeHuelbes (Tucson, Ariz.) led the squad with six points, including back-to-back layups that led to the SUNY Delhi timeout.
- Coming out of the break, the Lynx's momentum did not stop as the visitors finished the third on a 10-2 burst and took a 61-32 lead going into the final quarter. Bella Terry (El Cajon, Calif) helped close out the quarter for the Lynx with six points on three-straight layups.
- Despite the fourth quarter being much closer, the Lynx never let the Broncos gain momentum and outscored the hosts 15-13 for the 76-45 win. During the final quarter, Alawnah Dunda (Fort Ann, N.Y.) led Lesley in scoring with seven points.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Jaira Moore (Chula Vista, Calif.) and Abbie Price (Waco, Texas) led Lesley with 14 points each. For Price, her 14 points marked a new career-high for the first-year guard.
- The Lynx also had two others score in double figures, with Gravitt finishing with 13 points and Terry chipping in 12.
- Dunda finished with a career-high nine points on the night.
- Leila Chisholm (Santa Barbara, Calif.) paced the Lesley offense with a season-high eight assists.
- Defensively, Dehuelbes was all over the glass with seven rebounds. She has now grabbed five or more rebounds in four of her last five games.
- For SUNY Delhi, Alexandra Reuss led the Broncos in scoring with 11 points.
- Lesley's defense smothered SUNY Delhi all night, forcing the Broncos to commit 30 turnovers, whereas the Lynx only had 16. It was the first time Lesley forced an opponent to commit 30 or more turnovers since 2019 (Feb. 17, 2019, at Bay Path University).
