THE LEAD – Led by double-doubles from both Ahidali DeHuelbes (Tucson, Ariz.) and Bella Terry (El Cajon, Calif.), the Lesley University women's basketball team came away with a thrilling 47-44 win over Bard College Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both sides exchanged baskets early on, and after Lexi Miller cut Bard's deficit to four (7-4), Lesley grabbed its largest lead of the day (11-4) after a Terry free throw and Jaira Moore (Chula Vista, Calif.) three.
- Even with the seven-point, Lesley could not pull away as Bard ended the first down four (16-12) after Tianna Gonzalez hit a layup with 13 seconds left.
- Early in the second quarter, the Lynx would go up 18-12 after a Moore layup, but the visitors stormed back and took their first lead of the day (20-18) courtesy of an 8-2 run led by five points from Aislynn Dixon.
- Although Lesley responded and tied things at 20, the Raptors went into the half with a three-point lead (25-22). Terry led the offense for the Lynx in the first half with seven points, and not far behind were Moore and Leila Chisholm (Santa Barbara, Calif.) with five points apiece.
- When the third quarter started, both schools played each other evenly, and the Lynx found themselves down three (30-27) after a DeHuelbes three with 6:50 left in the quarter. However, the visitors kept Lesley away after a 6-0 run, which gave the Raptors their largest lead (36-27) when Miller knocked down another free throw.
- Later in the quarter, Bard would still hold a nine-point lead (38-29) but this time, the Lynx pushed back and were down three with 2:05 left in the third (38-35) thanks to a 6-0 run of their own. Abbie Price (Waco, Texas) helped key the run with five points on back-to-back buckets.
- Going into the fourth, Lesley was down five (40-35), but the squad recaptured the lead (43-41) with an 8-2 spurt when DeHuelbes made the go-ahead bucket.
- As the quarter went on, the Raptors pulled within two (46-44) when Erin Tobes knocked down two free throws with just 1:15 left. However, Lesley would not let the visitors get any closer as the squad anchored down on defense, and Terry swatted away two shots late in the fourth. Once Moore knocked down a crucial late free throw with eight seconds left, the squad held on for the 47-44 victory.
