Lynx Drop NECC Contest to Newbury

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Newbury College freshman guard Katie Haney (Winchendon, MA) scored 14 of her game-high 17 points in the first half to lead the Nighthawks to a 57-43 win over Lesley University in New England Collegiate Conference action. With the win, Newbury improves to 6-6 overall and 4-1 in conference play while the Lynx fall to 1-10 and remain winless, 0-5, in NECC play.

Haney finished the game with a double-double, recording 15 rebounds to go with her 17 points while also picking up a team-high four steals. Senior Catherine O'Connell (Quincy, MA) had a game-high 16 rebounds and chipped in nine points of her own while her sister, freshman Elyse O'Connell (Quincy, MA) added 11 points and five rebounds in the win. Senior guard Nicole Silvia (Berkley, MA) finished the night with six points and four rebounds for the Nighthawks.

Junior guard Sarah Apgar (Andover, NJ) led the offensive attack for the Lynx, scoring 14 points including going 6-of-8 from the free throw line. Apgar added seven rebounds and three steals in the loss. Freshman guard Ari Dimou (Manchester, NH) had a team high 13 rebounds for Lesley and added four points of her own.

With 6:58 left in the opening half, a layup by Lesley sophomore Carrie Fieger (Simsbury, CT) cut the Newbury lead down to four, 15-11. From there, it was all Nighthawks as they ended the half on a 17-8 run to open up a 13-point advantage at the break.

The double-digit lead would hold up for the entire second half as Newbury cruised to the 14-point victory.

The Nighthawks received solid contributions off the bench from sophomore center Jamie Vankoeverden (Brooklyn, NY) and freshman guard Alex Pezzella (Rockland, MA). Vankoeverden finished the night with six rebounds and three points while Pezzella added five points and four boards. Freshman guard Jere St. Lewis (Bensalem, PA) led Newbury with three assists.

Newbury held a distinct advantage on the boards, out-rebounding the Lynx 71-52 while holding them to just 20.3% shooting on the night.

Fieger ended up with eight points on the night to go with her three rebounds while freshman guard Tori Hoefs (Avalon, CA) five points, four rebounds, and a team-high four steals. Junior Emily Fleming (Medford, MA) also added seven points for the Lynx.

Lesley returns to action on Tuesday, January 15th when they travel to Southern Vermont College for a 4:00p tip-off. Newbury will also hit the court again on Tuesday when they play host to Elms College at 5:00p.
