Lynx fall short in bid for first win, 58-57

HOLYOKE, MA -- After leading for almost 40 minutes, Lesley lost a four-point lead in the final minute in losing 58-57 to Bay Path on a Kayla Skiffington putback with four seconds to play.

Skiffington led all players with 23 points and 17 rebounds, depositing a Je'Quanna Orr miss in the final seconds to put the Wildcats up 58-57 with the game-winner.

Point guard Emily Fleming led the Lynx with 14 points and fellow sophomore Sarah Apgar followed with 11.

A pair a Chelsea Contre baskets helped send the Lynx out to a 7-2 lead inside the 16:00 mark, and an Apgar three-pointer made it a 16-7 Lesley lead with under 10:00 to play. The Lynx led for the remainder of the half, and a Skiffington layup made it a 25-22 game at the half.

Bay Path's Taylor Riley scored to start the second, but Lesley responded with baskets from Contre and freshman Carrie Fieger to go back up five and led by at least two for until the final minute. Apgar coasted in for a layup to make it a 45-35 inside the 10:00 mark, at which point the Lynx looked poised to pick up the team's first win.

Back-to-back Mercedes Griffith three-pointers got the Wildcats back within four, which was the margin when Fleming scored with 1:04 to play at 57-53. Orr responded, cutting it to one 15 seconds later by knocking down her second triple of the game, and with the shot clock running down, Bay Path forced a Sherrey Smith turnover to get the ball back with under 20 seconds to play.

With five seconds left, Orr misfired on a jumper but was backed up by Skiffington, who put back Orr's miss and was fouled by Fleming after giving the Wildcats a 58-57 lead. She'd miss the ensuing free throw but the Lynx never got off a potential game-winning attempt.

At 0-22, Lesley travels to Lasell in non-conference action Tuesday night.
