Defense propels big win over Wheelock, 54-36

CAMBRIDGE, MA – Lesley University forward Kaitlyn Wechsler (Merrick, NY/Our Lady Mercy) became the second Lynx player to amass 1,400 career points as she led the Lesley to a 54-36 win over Wheelock in New England Collegiate Conference women's basketball play Tuesday.

The senior led all scorers, staying true to her NECC-leading average with 18 points. With her layup at the 16:47 mark of the second half, she joined Tia Cleckley '01 as the only 1,400 point scorers in Lynx history.

Lesley (13-10, 12-3 NECC) used a late first half 10-0 run featuring six points from Wechsler to bust open what was 20-20 tie in taking a 30-20 halftime lead. The Lynx forced 15 Wildcats turnovers in the period, with Wechsler scoring 13 of her 15 before intermission.

Forward Kayla Drescher (Wallingford, CT/Sheehan) kept the Wildcats (4-17, 3-11) within striking distance with six points and 12 rebounds as the Wildcats outrebounded Lesley 24-17 in the first.

Wheelock's Joy Holliday (Milford, MA/Milford) nailed a three-pointer to make it a seven-point contest on the team's second possession of the second half. The Lynx then rattled off a 9-0 run started by Wechsler's 1,400th career point and led by 15 or more the rest of the way.

For the Wildcats, Keneisha Milton (Boston, MA/Wayland) led all players with 16 rebounds to go along with her team-high 11 points, and Drescher followed with 15 boards and eight points. Wheelock won the battle of the boards, 47-43, but Lesley held Wheelock under 24 percent shooting (13-55) for a second time this season.

Brianne Caira (Pelham, NH/Pelham) enjoyed another solid all-around game for the Lynx, totaling 16 points, eight rebounds, six blocks and five assists. Rachael O'Mara (Levittown, NY/General Douglas MacArthur) rounded out a trio of Lynx in double figures with 16 points, 11 after halftime, tying Caira with a game-high five assists.

Lesley plays host to Plymouth State on Thursday at 8 p.m., while Wheelock takes on Elms College on Tuesday.
