Lynx drop third straight, 55-54, at first-place Webster

NASHUA, NH -- According to the age-old saying, bad things come in threes.

For the Lynx women's basketball team, the cliche certainly has held true over the last week, as Lesley lost its third consecutive conference heartbreaker - three losses by a total of five points.

For the second time in three nights, an inspired late second half Lesley comeback went by the wayside, as Daniel Webster improved to 20-2 and 13-0 in NECC play by holding on to a 55-54 win over the visiting Lynx.

In a game the Lynx never led but had a chance to win, an Alyssa Regan field goal put the Eagles up 17-9 inside the 11:00 mark of the first half. A free throw from Vanessa Bosques with 6:48 to play in the half made it a 10-point game, but Lesley still had a chacnce to go into halftime within striking distance.

Layups from Lynx forwards Cassidy Freed and Kaitlyn Wechsler cut the deficit to six with 1:00 remaining before half, when a Daniel Webster turnover led to an Erika Hill miss from downtown that could have cut the margin to three. Instead, the Eagles closed out the half with a Sarah Paternostro layup and a Vanessa Bosques jumper in the final seconds to go into intermission ahead 34-25.

Down nine, the Lynx left seven points at the charity stripe in the first, shooing 9-16 (56 percent) as a team at the line.

A Regan lay-in out of the break upped the Eagles lead to 11, and a Paternostro layup three minutes later did the same, but the Lynx senior-led attack made sure that would be the highest Daniel Webster's lead got. Seniors Wechsler and O'Mara made back-to-back layups to make it a 42-35 game at the 15:00 juncture, and two layups within 18 seconds from another senior, this time Freed, cut the deficit to 44-40. Shortly thereafter, a freshman chimed in, as Emily Fleming ripped Ariel Guzman and skated in for the fast-break lay-in to all but erase the 11-point hole, now trailing 44-42.

Guzman avenged the turnover with a three-point play compliments of a Fleming foul, and a pair of Tonisha Tate free throws put the Eagles lead back up to seven. Wechsler, however, responded with her own three-point play, which started a Lesley 7-0 run that tied the game at 49-49 with 4:44 remaining.

Again tied inside the 3:00 mark, a pair of Bosques free throws put Daniel Webster back on top. After Freed hit 1-2 at the line, Paternostro nailed a pair at the stripe to give the Eagles a 55-52 lead with 28 seconds to play

Wechsler missed a three-pointer for the tie, but senior Rachael O'Mara was there for the putback with 12 second left. O'Mara then got a steal off the inbounds pass, but the Lynx couldn't get a good look at what would have been a potential game-winning shot, falling 55-54.

Wechsler led all scorers with 18 points. Brianne Caira and Freed posted double-doubles of 12 points and 11 rebounds and 10 points and 12 rebounds, respectively. O'Mara rounded out four seniors in double figures with 10 points to go along with five rebounds and three steals.

Following its unfortunate three-game road trip, Lesley plays host to winless Bay Path on Saturday at 6 p.m. in the Lynx Pink Zone game. Lynx cheerleaders will be taking donations and sponsoring drawings during the game to benefit the WBCA/Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Fans are encouraged to wear pink in honor of breast cancer research.
