Mountaineers upset first-place Lynx, 59-57

BENNINGTON, VT -- In search of a tenth straight win, Lesley was upset Saturday afternoon at Southern Vermont, 59-57. Brianne Caira totaled a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds, and Kaitlyn Wechsler put in her sixth straight game of 20-plus points.

Joa Claircus led the upset with a game-high 31 points on 13-20 shooting. She scored six points in a first-half 9-0 Mounaineers run that erased an eight-point Lynx lead. After a pair of Abby Riedel free throws, a Jennie Vallesio gave Lesley a 29-27 halftime lead.

A Racheal O'Mara jumper and a pair of O'Mara free throws gave the Lynx a nine-point second half lead, 40-31. A 12-3 Mountaineers run crowned by three straight Claircus points tied the contest at 45-45, then took a 49-47 lead on a Riedel jumper. An Alyssa Davis three-point play extended the lead to five points under the 4:00 mark. O'Mara made it a 57-55 game with 1:10 left, but Claircus' jumper with 34 seconds left iced the victory.

O'Mara hit 6-7 free throws in scoring 20, and point guard Emily Fleming added seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Lesley slips into second place at 10-1 in NECC play, 11-8 overall. The Lynx return to play on Tuesday at Mitchell.
