Lynx get defensive in 47-25 win over Wheelock

CHESTNUT HILL, MA -- A stifling Lynx defense held Wheelock to 19 percent shooting and forced 26 turnovers as Lesley toppled the Wildcats 47-25 Tuesday night on the campus of Pine Manor College.

Kaitlyn Wechsler continued her torrid scoring with 24 points in 29 minutes and tied Brianne Caira with a team-high eight rebounds. Caira added 10 points and Cassidy Freed added seven rebounds as the 8-7 Lynx got back on the right side of .500 and remained a perfect 8-0 in New England Collegiate Conference play.

The first-place Lynx jumped out to a 24-3 lead, eliminating any cause for concern early. Wechsler led all players with 12 points in the first, and Rachael O'Mara scored all seven of her points before halftime, when Lesley led 26-11 on the strength of 50 percent shooting and 16.7 percent field goal defense.

Lesley led by 15 or more the entire second half. For the night, the Lynx managed 19 points off 26 Wildcats turnovers, but Lesley's domination of the paint was the difference. The visitors outrebounded Wheelock 39-31 and outscored the Wildcats 32-8 in the paint.

Lynx point guard Emily Fleming dished out a game-high seven assists in the win, adding a pair of steals in her 25 minutes.

A three-point play in the closing seconds from Wheelock's Randi Davis prevented the Wildcats from joining the Lesley record books. Wheelock came within two points of tying the mark for the fewest points ever scored by a Lesley opponent, done most recently by Anna Maria College, which scored 23 on November 18, 2007.

For Wheelock, Kayla Drescher led the team with nine points and six rebounds on 4-9 shooting.

Still tied with Daniel Webster atop the NECC standings, Lesley is in action again on Thursday in non-conference play at Rivier at 7:00 p.m.
