Lynx stay on top of NECC, top Bay Path 69-39

HOLYOKE, MA -- Lesley remained undefeated in league play and tied for first place in the New England Collegiate Conference with a 69-39 win at Bay Path College Thursday night.

Brianne Caira scored 23 points in 25 minutes, and Cassidy Freed pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds in the Lynx best defensive effort of the season to date.

Freshman Emily Fleming handed out a team season-best seven assists in only 20 minutes, Rachael O'Mara poured in 14 points on 7-11 shooting and Kaitlyn Wechsler rounded out a trio of double-digit scorers with 11.

Lesley's stifling defense held Bay Path (0-4, 0-11 NECC) to 29 percent shooting, while the Lynx (3-7, 3-0 NECC) shot a season-best 54.5 percent from the floor, including a 61.5 percent clip in the first half.

Caira scored 11 of her game-high 23 in the first 8:00 as Lesley opened up a 17-6 lead. A Caira layup later put the Lynx up 29-12 inside the 4:00 mark, and Lesley cruised into halftime with a 35-20 lead.

In addition to the team's hottest shooting half of the season, Lesley dominated the boards in the first, pulling down 23 rebounds to only six for the Wildcats.

Nineteen of Caira's 23 points came before intermission, and the Lynx led by 15 or more the rest of the way. Nine different Lynx scored, and all 11 players registered either a rebound or assist.

Led by Freed's 13, 12 on the defensive end, Lesley outrebounded the Wildcats 40-23 for the game.

Reigning NECC Rookie of the Week Justine Hook led Bay Path with 13 points and a game-high six steals.

In her first action of the season, Lynx sophomore Erika Hill tossed in five points in 11 minutes, and freshman Samantha Olivieri added four points and four rebounds in 13 minutes.

Caira, who entered the game as the nation's leader in blocks per game at 4.3, turned back three shots on the night, as did Freed. O'Mara grabbed a season-high four steals as Lesley remained tied atop the league standings with fellow undefeateds Mitchell (4-0 NECC) and Daniel Webster (3-0).

With its nine-game road trip officially in the rear view mirror, Lesley now returns to Cambridge, playing host to Southern Vermont (2-10, 0-5 NECC) Saturday evening at 6:00.
