Second half run distances UMass-Boston from Lynx

BOSTON, MA -- A 10-0 second half run turned a 31-30 game into an 11-point Beacons lead, and UMass-Boston (8-1) topped the Lynx, 53-44 Thursday night at Clark Athletic Center.

Senior forward Rachael O'Mara led Lesley (1-6) with team-highs of 15 points on 3-5 shooting from downtown and five assists. Center Brianne Caira threw in eight points and eight rebounds as Lesley failed to win for the second time in as many nights.

An O'Mara three 2:30 into the contest put the visitors on top, 3-2, but a three-pointer from UMass-Boston freshman Shelly Buck gave the lead back to the Beacons, who would hold it the rest of the night. Boston held at least a two-possession lead for the remainder of the frame, but the lead could have been more if not for consecutive three-pointers from Lynx freshman Samantha Olivieri, the second of which made it a 25-21 game. Following Olivieri's second trey, the Beacons silenced Lesley over the final 4:00, scoring four straight points to go into halftime with its biggest lead yet, 29-21.

The Lynx three-ball nearly erased the Beacons lead to start the second. Freshman Kacie St. Onge and O'Mara each connected from downtown to make it a 31-30 game with 16:47 remaining. From there, though, the sword turned against the Lynx, as back-to-back three-pointers from Buck capped a 10-0 run that broke the game open in Boston's favor.

A layup from Buck, who led UMass-Boston with 13 points, made it a 16-point game at the 7:38 mark. Lesley chipped away using O'Mara's third of three treys and a Kaitlyn Wechsler jumper that cut the margin to single digits, at 53-44. Both teams then went scoreless the rest of the way, and that would be the final.

Lesley shot just 29 percent for the game, but UMass-Boston was only slightly better at 31.3 percent. While the Beacons only slightly outrebounded Lesley, 35-32, the difference was what Courtney Mattingly's team did with its extra opportunities, outscoring the Lynx 10-1 on second-chance points. The Beacons also turned 21 Lesley turnovers into 22 points, while Lesley scored only seven points off turnovers.

Wechsler added eight points for the Lynx, playing all 40 minutes for the second day and third game in a row. Olivieri scored her first six collegiate points on 2-3 shooting, both three-pointers, blocking one shot in a career-high 18 minutes. St. Onge totaled six points and six rebounds, shooting 2-5 from the floor, both three-pointers.

Lesley returns to NECC play, traveling to Chicopee, MA to take on Elms College on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
