Wechsler tops 1,000 points in loss to Emmanuel

CAMBRIDGE, MA -- Lesley forward Kaitlyn Wechsler (Merrick, NY/Our Lady Mercy) scored career point No. 1,000 as Lesley fell to Emmanuel, 66-36, in both teams' season openers Tuesday night at Nicholas Athletics Center.

Wechsler led all scorers with 13 points on the night, while Emmanuel's Alyssa Schlehuber (Stoughton, MA/Tilton) paced the Saints with 12.

For Wechsler, a pair of free throws with 1:00 remaining in the second half put her at and above 1,000 points, becoming the fourth Lesley player to surpass 1,000 and first since Hailee Lowe a season ago. Wechsler, Lesley's leading returning scorer from last season, when she finished fourth in the New England Collegiate Conference at 14 points per game, shot 5-9 from the field, adding a steal and a rebound.

Andy Yosinoff's club exhausted the Lynx, running constant full-court pressure at Lesley and forcing the team into 26 first-half turnovers. The Saints, meanwhile, complimented the Lynx sloppy play with 15 turnovers in the first, going in up 30-12 at intermission.

Fiona O'Dwyer (Stamford, CT/Stamford) scored eight of her nine points in the first half, while Wechsler led only three Lesley first-half scorers with six.

Lesley hung around in the early portion of the second half, as an Emily Fleming steal and layup kept the Lynx within 18 with under 13:00 left, but an 11-0 run featuring seven points from Schlehuber put the Saints out in front by 30-plus in the waning minutes.

Kristen LeBel (Tolland, CT/Tolland), Emmanuel's leading scorer a year ago at 13.7 points per game, scored nine. Lesley senior Brianne Caira (Pelham, NH/Pelham), who led the New England Collegiate Conference with 61 blocks last season, swatted seven tonight, adding seven points and seven rebounds.

Lesley takes on Salem State in the Vikings Tip-Off Tournament on Friday at 6 p.m. Yosinoff's Saints take on William Smith College on Saturday at noon at Williams College.
