CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Lesley University women’s
basketball came just short of their first victory of the 2009-2010
season following a three-point 49-46 loss to UMass Boston on
Thursday evening. The Lynx are now 0-6 while the Beacons improved
to 4-5 (0-1 LEC) on the season.
After being down two points at halftime, Lesley rallied in the
second half to hold a lead. With 6:51 remaining in the game and
Lesley up one-point, UMass Boston’s Molly Piette
(WEBSTER, Mass./Bartlett) hit a crucial three-pointer to
give the Beacons a 42-40 lead. The go-ahead long ball would be the
final lead change of the game.
The Lynx would cut the Beacons’ lead to one following a
Kaitlyn Wechsler (MERRICK, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy
Academy) layup in the paint, but that is the closest
Lesley would get as UMass Boston went on to victory.
Lesley had the top two leading scorers in the game with
Brianne Caira (PELHAM, N.H./Pelham) and Wechsler
leading the way with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Caira added 12
rebounds to complete the double-double and both players combined to
go 13-for-20 from the floor.
UMass Boston’s most efficient contributors came off the bench
to score 21 of their 49 points. Piette had a team-high 11 points
and Sarah McDonough (WEYMOUTH, Mass./Archbishop
Williams) hit 4-of-6 attempts from the field, including
two three-pointers, for 10 total points.
The Lynx once again got solid play from their point guard
Jodi Fralick (WOBURN, Mass./Woburn) who played all
40 minutes and tallied eight assists, seven rebounds, and two
steals.
Lesley returns to action on Saturday, December 12 for their first
New England Collegiate Conference game of the season against Bay
Path College at 1:00 pm. UMass Boston takes on Rhode Island College
also on December 12.
