NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Lesley University women’s
basketball team handed Mitchell College their first New England
Collegiate Conference (NECC) loss of the season after a 91-64
defeat. Lesley improved to 3-7 (2-1 NECC) while Mitchell dropped to
2-6 (2-1 NECC).
Four players finished in double figures for the Lynx, led by a
game-high and season-high 21 points from junior Kaitlyn
Wechsler (MERRICK, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Academy).
Wechsler was 5-of-6 from the floor including 4-of-5 from beyond the
arc. Wechsler also did a nice job of converting opportunities at
the free throw line by sinking 7-of-8 attempts.
Mitchell was led by senior guard Jen Iglesias (WATERBURY,
Conn./Sacret Heart) who had a season-high 20 points with
the majority of her points from coming from long range with six
treys.
Lesley scored the first 12 points of the game and never looked
back. Hailee Lowe (HAMILTON, Mass./Hamilton-Wenham
Regional) accounted for five of those points during the
stretch. Lowe finished with 18 points, 10 rebounds, two assists,
two steals, and two blocks.
Towards the end of the first half, Mitchell went on a 12-2 run but
the Lynx rebounded with a 15-3 run of their own over the final 5:21
of the period to take a 46-27 advantage going into halftime. The
first period was capped off by a buzzer beating jumper by
Georgia Saltzman (LYNN, Mass./Lynn English).
In the second half, the Mariners never threatened the Lesley as the
Lynx poured on the offense. Lesley pumped their lead to as many as
40 points thanks to 54.1% shooting from the floor including 58.3%
from long range. Rebounding was a key factor in Lesley’s
success as the visitors outrebounded the Mariners 45-34 on the
glass.
Also contributing in the game were Jodi Fralick (WOBURN,
Mass./Woburn) and Cassidy Freed (BRATTLEBORO,
Vt./Brattleboro Union) who each had 11 points and combined
for 13 assists. Erika Hill (DURHAM,
Conn./Coginchaug) was solid in 16 minutes off the bench
with eight points including 2-of-4 from beyond the arc.
Lesley will travel to Newbury College on Saturday, January 16 for a
2:00 pm game while Mitchell hosts Daniel Webster College on the
same day starting at 1:00 pm.
