Daniel Webster exacts revenge on Lynx, 74-56

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In a rematch of the 2008-2009 New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) women’s basketball championship game, the Daniel Webster College Eagles defeated Lesley University 74-56. Daniel Webster improved to 6-3 (1-0 NECC) while Lesley dropped to 2-7 (1-1 NECC).

Last season, the Lynx won their first ever conference championship by beating the Eagles in the NECC title game last February.

In this game, Lesley held the from tip-off until eight minutes left in the first period but after a layup by Joyce Chagan (BOOTHBAY HARBOR, Maine/Boothbay), the Eagles took a lead that they would they relinquish. Daniel Webster finished the first half on an 18-9 run and took a 36-28 advantage going into halftime. Chagan ended up with 12 points and seven points for the Eagles.

In the second half, Daniel Webster’s Alycia Gervais (WINDHAM, Conn./Windham) scored 12 of her game-high 20 points to put the Lynx away. Gervais finished with 20 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the floor and an impressive 8-of-10 from the charity stripe. She also completed the double-double with 12 rebounds and added five steals and three assists.

Leading the way offensively for Lesley was Brianne Caira (PELHAM, N.H./Pelham) who had 14 points and five rebounds. Defensively, Caira blocked six shots in 40 minutes on the court. Also hitting double-digit points for the Lynx were Hailee Lowe (HAMILTON, Mass./Hamilton-Wenham Regional) and Kaitlyn Wechsler (MERRICK, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Academy) who had 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Stepping up offensively for Daniel Webster was sophomore guard Vanessa Bosques (NORTH WINDHAM, Conn./Windham) who had 17 points, seven rebounds, three assists, a steal and a block.

Lesley will be back in action on January 12 at NECC rival Mitchell College starting at 5:30 pm while Daniel Webster travels to Southern Vermont College on the same night.
