Elms tops Lesley in battle of top NECC teams

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Lesley University suffered their first New England Collegiate Conference loss of the season to the visiting Elms College Blazers 60-51 on Thursday evening.  The Lynx fell to 9-9 (8-1 NECC) while the Blazers improved to 10-9 (8-2 NECC).

Elms scored nearly half of their points from the free throw line, shooting 69.2% hitting 27-of-39 attempts.  Junior Amanda Brogna (Oxford, Mass.) led the Blazers with 16 points and 16 rebounds.  Eight of her 16 points came from the charity stripe.

Complementing Brogna's effort was freshman guard Carolyn Talmadge (Wilbraham, Mass.) who was the only other Blazer in double-digit points with 10.  Talmadge commanded the offense well in 38 minutes on the court.

Lesley shot just 30.5% from the floor and struggled from long range, hitting 3-of-16 attempts from beyond the three-point line.

Hailee Lowe (Hamilton, Mass.), despite early foul trouble, came back in the second half to score 14 total points and grab nine rebounds.  Kaitlyn Wechsler (Merrick, N.Y.) also netted 14 points in the loss.

Both teams struggled with turnovers combining for 24 miscues in the first half.  Elms, however, was able to go into halftime with a 29-23 lead.

In the second half, a revitalized Lynx offense tied up the score at 33 early in the period and even took a two-point advantage at 37-35 with 12:35 remaining.

Elms went on an 8-2 run, capped off by a made layup on a foul by Brogna.  Broga would nail the ensuing free throw to give the Blazers a four-point advantage they would not relinquish.

Lesley will host Bay Path College on Saturday, February 7 for a 12:00 pm game.  Elms hosts Mitchell College on the same day starting at 2:00 pm.
