Lady Lynx open up conference play with victory

BROOKLINE, Mass. - In the first New England Collegiate Conference game of the season for the Lesley University women's basketball team, the Lynx defeated Newbury College 63-47 to break their seven game losing streak.  Lesley improved to 2-8 (1-0 NECC) on the season while Newbury remained winless at 0-8 (0-1 NECC).

All 10 Lesley players were able to score in the victory, with sophomore Hailee Lowe (Hamilton, Mass.) leading the way with 16 points.  Lowe was efficient from the floor, hitting 8-of-12 shots and grabbed four rebounds.

Kelly Harrington (Toledo, Ohio) came off the bench to score 10 points for the Lynx as the senior guard tallied six of her points from long range on 2-of-5 from beyond the arc.

The Nighthawks had two double-digit scorers in the game as Ashley Monteiro (Cambridge, Mass.) and Kendra Bannister (Stafford, Va.) scored 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Lesley jumped out to a commanding lead early in the first half outscoring Newbury 19-4 in the first 10 minutes of the period.  Harrington did most of her damage in the opening frame as she scored eight points to lead the offensive charge for the Lynx.

Newbury was able to create points off of turnovers in the second half, converting 14 Lynx miscues into 18 points.  The visitors were able to hold on for the victory as Lesley dominated the low-post, scoring 24 points in the paint.  The Lynx bench was also a factor, as the non-starters outscored the Nighthawks 27-8.

The Lynx will next travel to Becker College on Tuesday, January 13 for a 5:30 pm game.  Newbury hosts MIT on Monday, January 12 at 7:00 pm.
