Lesley splits weekend series with Vermont opponents

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Lesley University women's basketball team received clutch efforts from Kelly Harrington (Toledo, Ohio) and Georgia Saltzman (Lynn, Mass.) to lead the Lynx over Johnson State College 70-57.  With the victory, Lesley improved their record to 9-7 (4-3 North Atlantic Conference) while Johnson State dropped to 8-9 (4-3 NAC).

Harrington and Saltzman combined for 9-of-11 from beyond the arc and 32 total points to lead Lesley to victory.  Harrington netted 19 points hitting five three-pointers as well as nailing all four of her free throws while Saltzman finished with 13 points and hit her only free throws attempt.

Courtnie Leakeas (Lowell, Mass.), a day after surpassing 1,000 career points, finished with 12 points, three rebounds, three assists, and two steals.  Freshman center Brianne Caira (Pelham, N.H.) also had a good game with 10 points, six rebounds, two blocks and an assist before fouling out late in the second half.

Johnson State's Claudia Martineau (Washington, Vt.) led her team with 17 points, six rebounds, one block and one assist in just 23 minutes of work.  The Badgers also got double-digit points from Casey Rusin (Wilmington, Vt.) and Jenna Lewis (Middlebury, Vt.) who netted 12 and 11 points, respectively.

The Lynx held a single digit lead for much of the first half as the teams finished the first half with the score at 37-30 in favor of the home team.

In the second half, Johnson State was able to bring the lead down to just three points after Martineau made a jumper with 4:50 remaining in the game.  Lesley would not give up the lead, however, as Harrington scored seven of her team's last 14 points to solidify the win.

Lesley will next play non-conference opponent Framingham State College on February 2 at 7:00 p.m. while Johnson State will next face Castleton State on Tuesday January 29 at 7:30 p.m.
