THE LEAD—After taking on UMaine Presque Isle (UMPI) on Tuesday evening, the two squads met again on Wednesday afternoon for a contest, which the Owls won 84-65.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • UMPI's offense started early as the Owls scored the first eight points, leading to a quick Lesley timeout. Coming out of the break, the Lynx cut the Owls lead in half (8-4) thanks to four straight points from Malachi Howard (Winter Haven, Fla.). Despite cutting the deficit to four, UMPI's offense continued to play strong as the hosts went on a 12-0 run for a 14-point advantage (20-6) before Howard broke up UMPI's momentum with a layup.
  • Even with the Howard make, UMPI was not deterred. It continued the offensive pressure and went up 22 (38-16) thanks to an 18-8 spurt, which led to another Lynx timeout with 6:48 left. During the latest Owls run, James Yamashita led the offense with nine points.
  • After the timeout, it was more of the same as UMPI continued to hold Lesley at bay and ended the first half with a 45-29 advantage.
  • As the second half got underway, Lesley's offense responded and opened the frame, scoring 13 unanswered points and found themselves down three (45-42) with 17:27 remaining. CJ Leonard (Raynham, Mass.) spearheaded the Lynx rally with four points.
  • Although the Lynx pulled within three, the Owls gave themselves breathing room and went up by 10 (57-47) thanks to a 12-5 push highlighted by four points apiece from Saquan Carswell and Akhe McMichael.
  • For the remainder of the contest, UMPI maintained a double-digit lead and ultimately won 84-65.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Both Leonard and Tavon Rhodes (Dorchester, Mass.) led the Lesley offense with 16 points Wednesday afternoon. Meanwhile, Howard was the other lone Lynx scorer in double figures with 12 points.
  • On the glass, Rhodes led the way with eight rebounds, which tied a career-high.
