THE LEAD – Despite an impressive collegiate debut by first year guard Tavon Rhodes (Boston, Mass.), Lesley University dropped a 75-65 decision to Gordon College in the 2024-25 opener for both men's basketball programs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The contest was tight throughout the first half with the squads trading leads to a 34-32 halftime score in favor of the Scots. Rhodes led all scorers with 15 points at the break.
- The Lynx evened the score at 36-36 early in the second stanza before Gordon took the lead for good on an Isaac Javis layup with 18:57 left in the action to make it 38-36.
- The visitors led by as many as 16 (65-49) before Lesley responded with a late-game flurry as Rhodes cut the game to within two possessions with a pair of free throws with 3:25 remaining to pull LU to within four at 76-72. After a defensive stop, Lesley had an open look from three to pull within one, but the shot rattled out and Gordon closed the game on a 9-3 run to hold on for the 85-75 final.
INSIDE THE NUMERS
- Rhodes led all scorers with 27 points in his collegiate debut going 10-for-14 from the field to go along with a team-high eight rebounds.
- Malachi Howard (Winter Haven, Fla.) was the only other Lesley player in double-figures with 11 points.
- Jarvis had a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds, Bernie McGuiness was not far behind with 20 points, and Micah Steely rounded out the double-digit scorers with 15 points. .
