CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Southern Vermont College men's basketball team knocked down 13-of-24 from three-point range as the Mountaineers rolled to an 83-62 victory over Lesley University in New England Collegiate Conference action tonight at Buckingham, Browne, and Nichols. SVC junior Dolapo Olugbile (Laurel, Md.) led the charge, hitting 3-of-4 from deep on his way to a game-high 17 points to go with his four rebounds. The Mountaineers improve to 9-4 on the year and 3-1 in NECC play with the win, while the Lynx drop to 2-10 overall and 0-4 in league action.
Olugbile was joined by freshmen Rayshawn Taylor (Silver Spring, Md.) and Jordan Alston (Hughesville, Md.) who also were in double-figures for SVC, finishing with 16 and 13 points, respectively. Taylor finished 6-of-11 from the floor while Alston sparked the visitors in the first half, drilling his first four attempts from beyond the arc. Sophomore forward DeShawn Hamlet (Hartford, Conn.) chipped in with seven points while pulling down a game-high ten boards.
Freshman Trevonn Lewis (Chicago, Ill.) was the leading scorer for the Lynx with 11 points while senior Kris Bennett (Inglewood, Calif.) finished with ten points and three boards. Freshman Terrell Toney (Lakewood, Wash.) shot 4-of-8 from the field to finish with nine points while swiping a game-high four steals. Classmate Branden Padgett (New Baltimore, Mich.) came off the bench to finish with seven points, all of which coming from the free throw line where he connected on seven of his eight attempts.
Holding a 22-17 lead with 9:42 to go in the first half, the Mountaineers blew the game open with a 21-4 run over the next six minutes of play to take command with a 43-21 lead. Alston and Olugbile started the streak with back-to-back treys while Taylor led the visitors charge with eight points, including knocking down two from deep during the streak.
After taking a 48-30 edge into halftime, the Mountaineers did not slow down, scoring the first six points of the second stanza before opening their biggest lead of the night, 77-48, off an Olugbile trey with 4:40 to go.
SVC's 13 three's marked a new season-high, shattering their previous mark of seven three's hit in their season opening win over Williams College. The Mountaineers also pulled down 14 caroms off the offensive glass that turned into 16 second chance points.
Lesley struggled from the field, connecting on just 34.4-percent (22-of-64) including a paltry 2-of-15 mark from beyond the arc. SVC finished 46-percent (29-of-63) from the floor while out-rebounding the Lynx by a 47-36 margin.
The Lynx will return to the floor on Thursday, January 16th when they travel to Becker College at 7:00p while the Mountaineers will play host to Daniel Webster College at 7:00p on Tuesday, January 14th.
