Men's Basketball Falls in NECC Opener

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Regis College men's basketball team opened the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) schedule with a 57-51 win over Lesley University tonight at Buckingham, Browne, and Nichols. Pride senior Ryan Chambers (Abington, Mass.) led the way with 20 points, 18 of which came in the second half to help Regis improve to 2-5 on the year. With the loss, the Lynx fall to 1-5 in the young season.

The visitors used eight first half points from junior guard Osanto Marc (Kissimmee, Fla.) as they entered the break with a 22-16 edge, despite a slew of turnovers from both sides. Marc finished with 11 points in the game.

After the break, the teams exchanged buckets before Lesley went on a 4-0 run thanks to back-to-back steals from junior Nikalus Oliver (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) and freshman Trevonn Lewis (Chicago, Ill.) to cut the Pride lead to three, 39-36. Chambers ended the run and sparked a 4-0 run of his own as he took advantage of a breakaway layup.

The Lynx would cut the lead down to just one point with seven minutes remaining in the game when Lewis converted with a drive to the hoop, but failed to tie the score with the ensuing and-one free throw. The Pride would answer with a 10-3 streak to hold a 55-45 advantage with just under two minutes to go.

Lesley senior Mike Kaufman(Boca Raton, Fla.) would get it to single digits with a trey from the right wing, but Chambers iced the game with consecutive free throws with 38-seconds left to give the Pride their second win of the season.

Regis freshman forward Sam Jean-Gilles (Melrose, Mass.) finished with 12 points for the Pride while senior Ahmad Charles (Cambridge, Mass.) finished with seven.

Lewis and senior center Kris Bennett (Inglewood, Calif.) led the Lynx with 13 points apiece while Kaufman and Oliver each chipped in with eight. Junior point guard Justin Rosa (East Brunswick, N.J.) finished the game with seven.

With the win, Regis improves to 5-1 in their last six meetings with Lesley.

The Lynx return to action on Saturday, December 7th when they host NECC foe Mitchell College for a 7:00p tip-off. Regis will also be back in NECC action when they travel to Daniel Webster College at 1:00p.
