Watson, Nighhawks Soar Over Lynx

BROOKLINE, Mass. --The Newbury College men's basketball team completed the season sweep over Lesley University with the 72-58, in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC), on Senior Night, Monday evening. Reigning NECC Player of the Week, junior guard Eric Watson (New Rochelle, N.Y.) led the Nighthawks to victory netting a game-high 31 points.

Two minutes into the contest after the Lynx took their only lead of the game on a trey from first year guard and NECC Rookie of the Week, Anthony Mattocks (Sarasota, Fla.), Nighthawk senior guard Kenneth Melendez (Harlem, N.Y.) answered. Penetrating the lane, Melendez sparked the offense and ignited a 9-2 run as Newbury was off to the races.

Late in the first half, sophomore guard Dallas Serrano (Valley Stream, N.Y.) came off the bench and wasted no time getting in on the offense, dishing out three assists in four minutes as the Nighthawk lead swelled to 10 points. However, senior guard Matt Gibson (Quincy, Mass.) cut the deficit down to eight, 30-22, going into halftime.

When the teams emerged from the locker rooms, Watson and Serrano came out red-hot. The two New York City natives connected on three of Watson's six treys to open the half to give the Nighthawks a commanding 18-point lead that they would not relinquish.

After recording just two three-point jumpers in the first half, Watson was nearly unstoppable from long distance in the second period, draining six-of-eight from beyond the arc for 21 of his 23 points in the half and tie the Newbury career single-game high record for treys in a game with eight. Senior center Peterson Bernard (Boston, Mass.) rounded out the Nighthawks in double figures, notching his 14th double-double of the season, netting 13 points while ripping down a game-high 15 boards.

Junior forward Valentine Edobor (Dorchester, Mass.) led three Lynx in double digits, registering a career-high 17 points while sophomore guard Justin Rosa (East Brunswick, N.J.) followed up with 10 of his own. In addition to rounding out Lesley in double figures with 10 points, Mattocks also dished out a team-high five assists in the loss.

Newbury improves to 14-9 and 12-2 in conference action while Lesley falls to 7-16 and 5-9 in the NECC. The Nighthawks return to the hard-court on Wednesday, February 13th when they look to take the season series from Regis College. Tip-off's at 7:00 p.m. in Weston, Mass. Lesley will travel to Wheelock College on Thursday for a tilt with the Wildcats starting at 7:30p.m.
