Sharp shooting powers Nighthawks past Sanchez, Lynx

BROOKLINE, MA -- In spite of a game-high 19 points from Lynx guard John Sanchez, Lesley fell 67-58 in its NECC opener at Newbury College thanks to six three-pointers from Nighthawks freshman Milciades Carrasco.

As he did a night earlier in Lesley's 66-58 win over Eastern Nazarene, Sanchez came out of the gate firing. He connected on 4-5 field goals and all three attempts at the line for 11 first half points as the Lynx jumped out to a 15-6 lead. Carrasco, however, was even hotter, hitting on 4-5 three-point field goals in the half to send the Nighthawks into the locker room with a 32-27 lead.

One of Bryant Itonyo's three treys on the night pulled Lesley to within 33-30 out of the intermission, and a Sanchez layup put the Lynx on top 38-37. The lead wouldn't last, as Newbury's Eric Watson, mired with foul trouble and limited to three scoreless minutes in the first half, scored four straight in a 9-2 run before one last Lesley push.

Back-to-back three-pointers from John Stockton and Itonyo tied the game at 50-50 inside the 7:00 mark, which was when Steve Rosemond delivered from downtown, starting a string of Nighthawks three-pointers that would seal the game for Newbury.

Tim Young nailed consecutive threes that put the Nighthawks up nine before Carrasco 's fifth of the night made it a 64-52 game with 2:00 to play. After a Kris Bennett putback, Carrasco nailed his career-high sixth for good measure, caping a 67-58 Newbury win.

The freshman guard ended up with 18 points on 6-9 shooting from distance.

For the Lynx, Bennett finished with eight points on 4-5 shooting and a team-high eight rebounds. A night after hitting 10-10 at the free throw line, Sanchez made good on all five attempts at the stripe, adding five assists, four boards and two steals.

Lesley returns to play in Cambridge on Saturday at 3 p.m. against Regis College.
