Lynx advance to NEC Tip-Off Finals with 70-67 win

HENNIKER, NH -- Lesley evened its record at 1-1 on the season, squeaking out a 70-67 win over Berkeley (NY) College in the first round of the New England College Tip-Off Tournament Friday night in Henniker, New Hampshire.

Senior John Sanchez sank a pair of free throws with 15 seconds to play, and Berkeley's Kaseem Williams missed a potential game-tying three pointer as the Lynx escaped with the narrow win in advancing to take on SUNY-Canton on Saturday in the tournament finals.

Sanchez led the Lynx with 14 points on the night, while John Stockton added career highs of 10 points and seven rebounds on 2-4 shooting from three-point range. Forward Valentine Emebo added 12 points in 25 minutes to round out a trio of Lynx in double figures.

Lesley overcame a 39-31 hafltime deficit, and the team came out with six straight points, with Stockton's second triple of the half giving Lesley its first lead of the period at 51-50.

A Jose Stable three-point play gave the Knights a 57-55 lead at the 9:00 mark, but an Emebo layup and a Matt Gibson three-pointer gave the Lynx the lead for good. Sanchez hit four straight free throws with a Kris Bennett layup in between in holding off a pesky Berkeley club, 70-67.

Stable and Williams led all players with 19 points each for the Knights, which lost in spite of controlling the boards 37-29.

Lesley advances to take on SUNY-Canton on Saturday in the tournament finals at 3 p.m.
