MIT effective from long range in 76-43 triumph

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Massachusetts Institute of Technology continued their success against fellow Cambridge institution Lesley University in a 76-43 win.  The victory marked the fourth straight year in which the Engineers have defeated the Lynx.  MIT improved to 5-3 overall while Lesley dropped to 2-6.

The Engineers took were able to free up their outside shooters to hit 9-of-28 three-point attempts in the game.  Leading the offensive charge were Jamie Karraker (Morgantown, W. Va.) and Jimmy Bartolotta (Littleton, Colo.) who tied to score a game-high 20 points each.  Karraker hit 4-of-12 deep balls while Bartolotta did much of his damage from the free throw line, hitting 9-of-10 attempts.

Senior Billy Johnson (Everett, Wash.) provided an inside presence for MIT as the forward finished with 14 points, 10 rebounds, four steals, and three blocks in the game. 

Lesley struggled to find consistent offense throughout the game, but ended up with two double-digit scorers.  Nijel Robinson (Plainsboro, N.J.) led the Lynx with 11 points and was complemented by Jonathan Cruz (Haverhill, Mass.) who netted 10 points. 

Jesus Trejo (Methuen, Mass.) collected two early fouls, but did manage to finish the game with a game-high 14 rebounds.

For much of the first half, the Lynx were able to hang with the Engineers.  With 8:26 remaining until halftime, Matt Grassa (Everett, Mass.) hit a jumper that brought the Lynx to within two points at 15-13. 

An 18-5 run by MIT, however, gave the Engineers a double-digit lead going into the second half. 

Karraker dominated the second half of the game as he scored 12 of his 20 points as he hit five shots from the field including two from beyond the arc.  Johnson also contributed with eight of his 14 in the period.

MIT converted 31 points off of 24 turnovers by Lesley and held an advantage in points in the paint, outscoring the Lynx 26-18.

Lesley will be in action on Saturday, December 6 at Salve Regina starting at 3pm while MIT will host Tufts University on the same day at 3pm.
