Chatman and Stevens lead Lesley over Becker

LEICESTER, MA -- The Lesley University Men's Basketball team snapped its longest losing streak of the season at the most opportune time, defeating Becker, 85-77, in their first North Atlantic Conference game of the season.

Senior co-captains Joe Chatman (Boston, Mass.) and Mark Stevens (Las Vegas, Nev.) led the way for the Lynx (3-5, 1-0 NAC) - who ended a three-game losing stretch - combining for 56 points, 11 rebounds, and nine assists.

Chatman had 30 points, going 16-for-17 from the free throw line, and dished out eight assists while grabbing five rebounds. Stevens grabbed six boards to go along with a season-high 26 points. He went 10-for-16 from the field and 4-for-5 from three-point land.

Becker (3-6, 0-1 NAC) was paced by its own long-range marksman, Kevin Miranda (Brockton, Mass.), who finished with 23 points and hit 6-of-13 three-point attempts. Reserve big man Trey Jacobs (Lexington Park, Md.) had 20 points and six rebounds. Highly-heralded point guard Travis Suber (Springfield, Mass.) had nine assists, but was held to 10 points on 4-of-15 shooting. He was averaging 20.7 points per game entering the game.

After leading by as many as 14 points at 40-26 with four minutes to go in the first half, Lesley went into halftime up just 44-42. Still, it was the first time this season that the Lynx had the lead at the break.

The Hawks continued their run into the second half, though, grabbing a 68-62 advantage with nine minutes remaining after another Miranda three-pointer. But Chatman and Stevens combined for their own 12-0 run to put the Lynx back up for good. Lesley extended its lead to 75-68 with five minutes left after a free throw by Jesus Trejo (Metheun, Mass.).

Trejo, a freshman center and already two-time NAC Rookie of the Week honoree, was limited to just seven points, but had a game-high 10 rebounds.

Miranda again put a scare in the Lynx with another three to cut the Becker deficit to 75-73 with 4:20 to go, but Lesley scored 10 of the game's final 14 points to take the win.

The Lynx will finish out its pre-Christmas schedule this week with a pair of games. Lesley will face Westfield State at home at 8 p.m. on Tuesday and will travel to Wheelock for another NAC road contest on Thursday. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
