Lesley falls in the final seconds to Newbury

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Lesley University men's basketball team made a heroic comeback in the second half of their game against Newbury College, but eventually lost in the final seconds 75-74.  The loss drops Lesley's record to 5-12 (3-3 North Atlantic Conference).  Newbury improved to 9-6 on the season.

Led by senior captain Mark Stevens (Las Vegas, Nev.) who finished with 23 points, seven rebounds and three steals, the Lynx were able to get themselves back in the game after being down by as many as 19 in the second half.  With 8:07 left in the game and down 18, the Lynx went on a 20-4 run to pull within two points.

With less than a minute left, Lesley guard Joe Chatman (Boston, Mass.) attempted two three-pointers to take the lead but missed both.  Following a Dana Datillo (Derry, N.H.) steal, Chatman was given a third chance to give Lesley the lead and hit the go-ahead shot from beyond the arc with just 28 seconds remaining.  The senior finished with 13 points, six rebounds, four assists, one block, and one steal.

On the following possession for Newbury, senior point guard Steven Morris (Somerville, Mass.) was fouled and nailed both of his free-throws to give the Nighthawks a 75-74 advantage.  Morris finished with 12 points, eight rebounds, and five assists for the game.

Chatman was given the ball one more time with five seconds left to win the game, but his jumper was well defended and Newbury held on for the win.

The Nighthawks were led by Arch Mitchell (Framingham, Mass.) who had 25 points, four rebounds, and three assists in the winning effort.  Kevin Cleveland (Lynn, Mass.), Javon Mathis (West Hartford, Conn.) and Morris also scored in double-figures with 16, 14, and 12 points, respectively.  Senior guard Ivan DaSilva (New Bedford, Mass.) played well as he dished out seven assists.

The only other double-digit scorer for the Lynx was Jon Cruz who finished with 10 points in 25 minutes of play.

Lesley will next travel to Salem State College on February 5 at 7:00 p.m.  Newbury visit Western Connecticut State College on Thursday January 31 at 7:00 p.m.
