Lynx move to .500 in conference play with win over JSC

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Male Lynx improve to .500 overall and in conference play with a 101-96 win over Johnson State College.  Lesley was led in that game with a balanced offense including five players in double figures.  Joseph Chatman (Boston, Mass.) led the team with 18 points and added a team best 7 assists.  Malcolm Andrews (Medford, Mass.) added 17 points of his own coupled with a team high 7 rebounds.  Stanley Chamblain (Everett, Mass.), Zach Rocha (New Bedford, Mass.) and James Parker (Sandwich, Mass.) added 16, 13 and 10 points respectively.

Johnson State was led by Charlie Viana (Valley Stream, N.Y.) who had game highs in both points 31, and rebounds, 12.  The Badgers also got support from Bobby Shedd (Johnson, Vt.) who scored 22, Mike Bosch (Carrollton, Ga.) who knocked in 16, and Tim Santarcangelo (Bennington, Vt.) who added 14 of his own.

Johnson State out shot Lesley from the field 58%-46%, and from three-point range 36%-27% but it was Lesley's tenacious defense that was the key to the victory.  Lesley forced 33 Johnson State turnovers, 20 of them steals.  The 33 turnovers led to 30 Lesley points.

Lesley led at the half by 6 (50-44) and it increased it to 10 on a Sam Mead (Worthing, ENGLAND) lay-up early in the second half.  However, Johnson State would keep it reasonably close for the entire second half.  Bobby Shedd converted a fast break lay-up with 13 minutes left in the second half to bring the Badgers to within two.  Lesley responded with five quick unanswered points over the next minute to push the lead back to 7.  Johnson would respond again the back and forth battle continued through the end.

With 9:16 remaining in the game Santarcangelo gave the Badgers their first lead of the game on a three-pointer.  Mead would hit a jumper on the next possession for the Lynx tying the game back up.  Viana would score the next six points by himself for the Badgers to give them a 4 point lead with 8:27 left.

Lesley refused to let the game out of their reach and with 3:10 left in the contest Andrews buried a jumper to give the Lynx a 91-90 lead.  On their next possession the Lynx went right back to Andrews who gave Lesley a three points lead.  After Viana shot one of two from the line it was Andrew yet again who nailed to free-throws to give Lesley a four point lead with 2:00 left.

Chamblain seemed to put the game out of reach as he gave Lesley a 6 point lead with 47 seconds left.  However, Mike Bosch brought Johnson State right back with a three-point play.  It was Mark Stevens (Las Vegas, Nev.) who would finally put the game out of reach as he hit two key free-throws with 24 seconds left to seal the deal for the Lynx.

With the win Lesley improved to 4-4 on the year and 2-2 in conference play.  For more information on the Lesley men's basketball team please go to their website.
