THE LEAD – The Lesley University baseball team picked up a pair of North Atlantic Conference (NAC) wins Monday against the University of Maine – Presque Isle squad, posting a 14-2 Game 1 win before pulling out a 4-3 Game 2 victory in extra innings. The Lynx have now won six straight, all in NAC play.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 1)

  • The Lynx put up crooked numbers in the first four innings including a three-run first to set the tone for the day. James Brandon belted an RBI single to left to get the scoring started before Kevin Dorsey and Cal Caruso also collected RBIs in the frame.
  • The Owls got one back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI double by Gabriel Wheeler but Lesley punched in the second with a four-spot to take a 7-1 lead through two. Christian McElroy delivered an RBI single before Owen Kalagher blasted a two-run triple, eventually scoring on a passed ball.
  • LU got two more in the third to move the score to 9-1, getting another RBI from McElroy in the action before pushing three across in the fourth, all unearned runs, making it 12-1 through the middle frames.
  • Anthony Searels singled down the right-field line in the sixth to pull UMPI to a 13-2 margin but an RBI by Colin McCarthy in the seventh capped the scoring as Lesley held on with a 14-2 conference "W".

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GM 1)

  • Lesley only collected six hits in the victory including two from McElroy and really took advantage of a tough defensive morning by the Owls who committed five errors and surrendered four unearned runs.
  • Roy Lenhard (2-1) picked up the win on the mound for the Lynx going 5.0 innings and allowing just one run on three hits while striking out three.
  • James Labombard pitched well in relief, working the final two frames and scattering three hits while allowing just one run.
  • Jonah Baude (2-4) suffered the loss going just 1.1 innings and surrendering seven runs (six earned) on give hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 2)

  • Brandon got Lesley on the board in the first with a solo blast, his third of the year and first since the squads Spring Break trip to Myrtle Beach in March.
  • UMPI took its first lead of the day in the second when Hector Perez tripled down the right field line to drive in two and put the Owls ahead, 2-1, in the early action of Game 2.
  • Following three scoreless frames, the Lynx evened the score at 2-2 in the fifth on an RBI single by McCarthy.
  • In the seventh, McCarthy stayed hot with an RBI double to right-center to give Lesley a brief 3-2 cushion before the Owls answered in the bottom half of the frame. Perez singled through the right side to drive in the tying run and UMPI threatened for the walk-off but first year Raymond Morales came on in relief to get out of the jam and send the game to extras.
  • Lesley wasted no time to regain the lead as Caden Shott singled down the left field line in the eighth to bump LU ahead 4-3. Morales got a pair of strikeouts in the eighth to preserve the 4-3 win for Lesley.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GM 2)

  • Brandon and McCarthy each collected two hits in the win as did Perez for the Owls.
  • Morales (2-1) earned the win in relief, securing the final four outs and surrendering just one hit to go along with the two K's.
  • Jacob Nemergut put together a strong start for Lesley hurling 6.0 innings of two-hit ball, striking out eight in a no-decision.
  • Garrett Chadwick threw well in a no-decision going 7.0 innings for the Owls, striking out six. Spencer Harmon took the L working the eighth and allowing one run on two hits to fall to 1-4 on the year.
