THE LEAD – The Lesley University baseball team wrapped up a successful four-game weekend North Atlantic Conference (NAC) series versus VTSU Lyndon by taking both games 7-6 in game one, and 6-0 in game two.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 1)
- VTSU wasted no time in the first inning by jumping out to a 2-0 lead thanks to RBIs from both Matt Gonyeau and EJ Camden. In the bottom half of the frame, Lesley responded and got a run back after James Brandon (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) drove in a run on an RBI single which made it 2-1.
- However, the Hornets answered in the next inning when Brayden Ross ripped a single past short and increased the VTSU lead back to two (3-1). Even with the lead, Lesley once again answered the Hornets scoring and tied things at three in the bottom of the second by taking advantage of a balk and throwing error.
- From then on, Lesley would go on to score at least one run for the next three innings which also included a two-run fifth that put the Lynx up 7-3. Prior to that inning, Justin Dennett (Fairfield, Conn.) belted his first home run of the season in the fourth which gave Lesley a 5-3 lead at the time.
- Despite the large lead, VTSU Lyndon made things interesting in the seventh after pulling within one (7-6) after Camden notched an RBI single. VTSU would now have the go-ahead runner at the plate and tying run at third. While the Hornets were threatening with two outs, Lesley pitcher Patrick Teasdale (Stamford, Conn.) escaped the jam by forcing a pop out to second for the 7-6 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GM 1)
- Dennett's home run marked the second of his career.
- Raymond Morales (Naugatuck, Conn.) led the Lesley offense with two RBIs on the day. It marked his second multi-RBI game of the season.
- Brandon extended his hitting streak to seven games with two hits on the day.
- Lynx starter Andrew Gryniewicz (Hollis, N.H.) got the start and win today thanks to six solid innings while allowing seven hits and five runs (three earned) and striking out five.
- Camden led the VTSU Lyndon offense with two RBIs and two hits on the day.
- Hornets started Nathan Bigelow was dealt with the loss after going six innings and allowing 10 hits and givng up seven runs (four earned).
- Lesley finished the game with 10 hits which marked the ninth time this year the squad has crossed the 10-hit plateau.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 2)
- Throughout the first three innings of the second game, both pitchers kept the other side's offense quiet. In the top of the second the Hornets threatened to get on the board after loading up the bases with two outs. However, Lesley starter Charles Ambroult (Quincy, Mass.) escaped the jam by getting a strikeout to end the frame.
- VTSU once again loaded the bases in the top of the third but Ambroult avoided any damage by forcing a ground out to keep the game tied at zero through three.
- In the bottom half of the fourth, Lesley broke the scoreless tie thanks to an Owen Kalagher (Fairfield, Conn.) sacrifice fly but it was the next inning where the Lynx would do their most damage. In the bottom of the fifth, the squad plated five runs to go up 6-0. Christian McElroy (Toms River, N.J.) and Colin McCarthy (Rehoboth, Mass.) highlighted the frame with nearly back-to-back home runs.
- In the final inning, Morales came in and retired the side which included two strikeouts to secure the 6-0 weekend sweep.
