Baseball Sweeps NAC Doubleheader vs. VTSU Lyndon, 15-10 and 6-3

THE LEAD – In their second North Atlantic Conference (NAC) weekend series, the Lesley University baseball team earned its first two NAC wins by sweeping VTSU Lyndon 15-10 in game one, and 6-3 in game two. 

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 1)

  • Lesley opned up the scoring in the bottom of the second thanks to a two-run frame highlighted by an RBI single from Kevin Dorsey (Cibolo, Texas) that made it 1-0 at the time. 
  • After Lesley starter Roy Lenhard (Shelton, Conn.) pitched through a scorless top of the third, the Lynx did their most damage in the bottom half of the frame by scoring four runs to make it 6-0. Christian McElroy (Toms River, N.J.) started off the scoring in the inning when he ripped an RBI single past the Hornets second basemen which allowed Colby Jacobs (Charlton, Mass.) to score after he was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Later in the inning, Owen Kalagher (Fairfield, Conn.) would also notch an RBI of his own after he found a gap in right which made it 6-0. 
  • VTSU Lyndon would finally get on the board in the fourth and trim its deficit down to three (6-3) highlighted by a two-run RBI double to right from EJ Camden. Despite cutting into the Lynx's lead, Lesley responded in the bottom half of th frame with a three-run inning of its own which included a two-run RBI single to left off the bat of James Brandon (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) which made it 8-3 at the time. 
  • The Hornets would get one run back in the fifth which made it 9-4 but once again the Lesley bats tacked on more runs thanks to a two-run RBI single to right from McElroy and putting the Lynx up 11-4. Despite the large lead, VTSU would continue to hang around by plating two runs in the top of the seven making it 11-6.
  • However, in the bottom half of the seventh, Lesley would have its third inning where the squad scored three or more runs by adding on three runs and going up 14-6. In that inning, both Brandon and Colin McCarthy (Rehoboth, Mass.) each recorded RBIs for the Lynx. Lesley would also go on to add one more run in the eighth inning and increase its lead to nine (15-6). 
  • In the final inning, VTSU Lyndon would not go down without a fight as the visitors trimmed the deficit to five (15-10) after Bryan Nazario drew a walk with two outs. With the bases loaded and two outs, Lesley pitcher Logan Czachowski (Dorchester, Mass.) escaped the jam by getting the next batter to strike out and secure the 15-10 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GM 1)

  • Brandon and McElroy led the Lesley offense with three RBIs each. In total, seven different Lynx finished with at least one RBI. 
  • Lenhard earned his first win on the year Saturday after going 5.0 IP while giving up seven hits and four runs and striking out five. He has now struck out at least five batters in two of his last three starts.
  • For the Hornets, Camden led the way with three RBIs whereas Ryan Alt was right behind him with two.
  • VTSU Lyndon starter Jack Holley was dealt with the loss finishing with a line of 4.0 IP and giving up nine runs (four earned) and walking five while striking out five.
  • Lesley has now scored 10-plus runs three times this year and 3-0 when they cross the 10-run mark.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 2)

  • After both sides went scoreless for the first two innings, Lesley broke the scoreless tie thanks to alert base running from Jacobs. However, in the next inning, VTSU Lyndon would see its first lead on the afternoon thanks to a two-run fourth which included a sacrfice fly from Ryan Alt which gave the Hornets a 2-1 lead. 
  • Despite the lead, the Lynx answered back with a two-run inning of its own and went back up 3-2 courtesy of a two-run RBI single to right off the bat of Jacobs. Lesley would continue adding to its lead with runs in the fifth and sixth innings. In the sixth, Jacobs highlighted the Lesley offense thanks to an inside the park homer that went past the Hornets center fielder making it 6-2. 
  • In the final inning, VTSU Lyndon made things interesting by cutting the Lynx lead in half (6-3) after Alt took advantage of a wild pitch and was able to score. The Hornets would now have a runner at second with two outs and after the next batter drew a walk, Lesley pitcher Patrick Teasdale (Stamford, Conn.) sealed the victory after he forced a grounder right back to the mound and would take it himself to first for the 6-3 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GM 2)

  • Jacobs led the Lesley offense with a season-high four RBIs. His inside the park home run was also the first inside the park homer of his career.
  • Three different Lynx recorded two hits on the day including Brandon, McElroy, and Jacobs. 
  • Lesley starter Jacob Nemergut (Monroe, Conn.) nearly went a complete game by going 6.0 IP giving up just one hit and three earned runs while striking out a season-high seven.
  • Both Matt Gonyeau and Alt each led the Hornets with an RBI. 
  • VTSU Lyndon starter Alberto Bustamante was dealt with the loss after going 5.0 IP and allowing six hits and three runs but stirking out six. 
  • Lesley now holds the all-time series lead over VTSU Lyndon 7-5.
