THE LEAD – In Sunday's doubleheader against Husson, the Lesley University Lynx came away with a split by taking the first game 2-1, then falling in the second, 9-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 1)
- After going scoreless for the first two innings, Husson got on the board first thanks to an RBI from Jackson Curtis to make it 1-0 Eagles.
- However, Lesley responded in the bottom half of the third with a two-run inning which included the go-ahead RBI courtesy of Colin McCarthy (Rehoboth, Mass.). Prior to McCarthy's RBI, the Lynx got their first run by taking advantage of a passed ball which allowed Owen Kalagher (Fairfield, Conn.) to score after he had reached on a fielder's choice earlier that inning.
- From then on, Lesley starter Andrew Gryniewicz (Hollis, N.H) shut down the Husson bats including a stretch from the fourth to the sixth innings where he retired eight straight batters before allowing a walk with two outs in the sixth. Despite that walk, Gryniewicz escaped the inning by forcing a ground out to keep things a one-run game.
- Going into the final frame, Gryniewicz was lights out as the senior retired the side in the seventh which secured the 2-1 win for the squad.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GM 1)
- Gryniewicz's complete game Sunday was his second of the season and of his career. His five strikeouts also tied a season-high.
- Four different Lynx recorded a hit in game one including McCarthy, James Brandon (Manhattan Beach, Calif.), Raymond Morales (Naugatuck, Conn.), and Kevin Dorsey (Cibolo, Texas).
- Curtis guided the Husson offense with one RBI.
- The win in game one helped the Lynx snap a previous five-game losing streak to the Eagles.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 2)
- In the second game, it was all Husson as the visitors jumped out to a 4-0 lead which included a three-run top of the second. Tanner Evans highlighted the inning for the Eagles with a two-run RBI single to right. In the bottom half of the frame, Lesley got one run back thanks to an RBI single to right from Mason Erwin (Essex, Conn.) to make it a 4-1 game.
- After Husson plated another run in the fourth (5-1), the Eagles broke the game open in the fourth thanks to a four-run frame which included a two-run RBI single from Akira Warren that made it 8-1 at the time.
- Despite the large deficit, the Lynx threatened in the bottom of the sixth with runners on first and second and two outs after Brandon singled to lead off the inning and Caden Shott (Richmond, Calif.) drew a walk. Unfortunately, Eagles pitcher Noah Hurd escaped the jam by generating a strikeout to end the Lesley threat. In the final inning, Lesley was able to get a runner on first thanks to a Colby Jacobs (Charlton, Mass.) lead-off walk. However, Husson was able to force a double-play the next at-bat and then get a Lesley flyout to earn the 9-1 win.
