THE LEAD – Lesley University dropped its opening North Atlantic Conference (NAC) contests to Husson University by scores of 6-3 and 4-0 on Saturday afternoon in NCAA Division III baseball action at Minuteman Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 1)

  • The Eagles got out of the gates quickly with a run in the first to take the lead for good in Game 1 of NAC conference play with a sac fly to center by Jackson Curtis to make it 1-0.
  • Husson threatened in the second with a leadoff triple to right-center by Tanner Evans but LU junior starting pitcher Roy Lenhard worked out of the jam, stranding Evans at third to keep it a 1-0 game.
  • The Eagles opened up a 6-0 lead in the third, plating five runs on three hits while taking advantage of three Lesley miscues. Matt Holmes delivered the big blow in the stanza with a moonshot two-run blast to right.
  • Lesley broke into the scoring column in the bottom of the third as senior centerfielder Colby Jacobs reached on an error, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch before coming around to score the first Lynx run of the day on an RBI groundout by sophomore third baseman Owen Kalagher to cut the lead to 6-1.
  • The Lynx continued to fight, making some noise in the sixth as James Brandon belted an RBI single up to middle to move the needle to 6-2 before Lesley loaded the bases to put the tying runner at the plate. Matt Wallingford limited the damage to the lone run in the frame, retiring the side to preserve the Eagles' 6-2 cushion heading into the final frame.
  • In the seventh, Lesley got the first two runners aboard via a Cal Caruso walk and a double to right by Jacobs to once again bring the tying run to the plate. Senior outfielder Christian McElroy pushed across the third Lesley run on an RBI groundout to make it 6-3 before Wallingford closed the door with a pair of K's to notch the complete-game victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GM 1)

  • Wallingford (1-1) allowed just two hits over 7.0 innings of work, striking out a season-high 10 in the win.
  • Lenhard (0-1) suffered the setback working the first 3.0 innings and striking out four before giving way to senior Jacob Nemergut who was phenomenal in relief shoving 4.0 innings of scoreless/hitless ball, striking out five in the outing.
  • Holmes' home run was his fifth of the season to lead all NAC players.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 2)

  • J. Curtis helped Husson spring out to a 2-0 in the nightcap, slamming a two-run homer of his own to right field to give the Eagles all the run support they'd need for the sweep.
  • Hunter Curtis added to the lead in the fifth delivering an RBI double through the left side to bump the Husson lead to 3-0.
  • The final run of the day for the Eagles scored in the seventh thanks to a bases loaded balk, allowing Cam Rendell to make it a 4-0 score, proving to be the final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GM 2)

  • Connor Abood and Alex Smith combined for the complete-game shutout. Abood (1-3) earned his first win of the season scattering four hits over 6.0 innings of work, striking out 12 while Smith earned his second save of the season working the final 3.0 innings and not surrendering a hit.
  • LU starter Charles Ambroult (0-2) suffered the loss going 4.2 innings and allowing three runs on five hits to go with five K's. Senior Patrick Teasdale worked two innings of hitless ball with four strikeouts before first year Raymond Morales finished the day tossing the final 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing one hit and three strikeouts.
