THE LEAD – In a tightly contested game throughout the afternoon, the Lesley baseball team fell to the Christopher Newport University Captains by a score of 4-2 Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Early in the contest, the Captains jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second. However, Lesely responded with a run of its own courtesy of a James Brandon (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) RBI evened things at one.
- For the next three innings, Lynx starter Roy Lenhard (Shelton, Conn.) kept the Captains bats silent, including four strikeouts. In the bottom half of the third, Christopher Newport threatened with runners on first and second with one out. But Lenhard escaped the jam by retiring the next two Christopher Newport batters to keep things tied at one.
- As both sides continued to trade scoreless innings throughout the afternoon, the Lynx broke the 1-1 tie in the top of the eighth. Justin Dennett (Fairfield, Conn.) led off the inning with a walk, and later, Kevin Dorsey (Cibolo, Texas) was hit by a pitch to give the squad runners at first and second with one out. The very next at-bat, Cal Caruso (Sarasota, Fla.), ripped an RBI single to left, which plated Dennett.
- Despite a one-run advantage, the Captains recaptured the lead in the bottom half of the frame thanks to a Cameron Slough three-run homer, making it 4-2 going into the ninth. In the final frame, Christopher Newport was able to retire the side and secure the 4-2 win.
