THE LEAD – In the opening game of the Montclair State Round Robin Weekend, the Lesley University baseball team fell short in Friday's game against Montclair State, 13-9 Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Red Hawks wasted no time, as the hosts plated four runs in the bottom of the first. Montclair's first inning was highlighted by an RBI single from Billy Tigar that made it 2-0 at the time.
  • After Montclair State tacked on another run in the second, Lesley trimmed the deficit to three (5-2) thanks to a two-run RBI single to right off the bat of James Brandon (Manhattan Beach, Calif.). Despite the two-run inning, Montclair State's offense continued to pull ahead with three more runs in both the third and fourth innings, which made it 8-2 after four.
  • However, Lesley would not go away and cut the Red Hawks lead in half and made it 8-4 by scoring two more runs in the fifth thanks to RBIs from Colin McCarthy (Rehoboth, Mass.) and Cal Caruso (Sarasota, Fla.). While the Lynx tried to grab momentum, Montclair State once again kept Lesley at bay and went up seven (11-4) with a three-run seventh with RBIs from three different Red Hawks.
  • Even with the large deficit, Lesley once again would not go away. The Lynx made a late push in the eighth by scoring four runs and now found themselves down three (11-8). In the frame, both Justin Dennett (Fairfield, Conn.) and Kevin Dorsey (Cibolo, Texas) each had RBIs, while Colby Jacobs (Charlton, Mass.) scored on a throwing error by Montclair State.
  • Similar to earlier in the game, once Lesley had momentum, Montclair State had an answer. In the bottom half of the eighth, the hosts increased their lead to five behind a three-run shot from Chase Fishcher. In the final inning, with two outs, the Lynx got a run back with an RBI double from Dennett that found a gap down the left-field line. This scored Brandon, who had singled earlier. Unfortunately, the Red Hawks were able to retire the next batter and secure the 13-9 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Three different Lynx finished with two RBIs on the day (Brandon, Dennett, and McCarthy).
  • With his two hits on the day, Brandon has extended his hit streak to six games, five of which have been multi-hit games.
  • Despite the loss, Lesley outhit Montclair State, 11-10. They have now reached the 10-hit mark in seven games this year.
  • Montclair State's offense was led by Fischer and Marcus Johnson, who had two RBIs on the day.
  • Red Hawks starter Evan Wodd pitched 5.0 innings, giving up five hits, four runs, and striking out five.
  • Friday's contest marked the first-ever matchup between the two teams.
