THE LEAD – The Lesley University baseball team continued its run down in Myrtle Beach in doubleheader action versus Cairn University and New Jersey City. The Lynx ended up falling in both games by scores of 11-3 and 15-10.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 1)
- The Highlanders struck first in the top half of the first inning, plating three runs. For the next two innings, Cairn scored at least one run, and after three, the Highlanders were up 5-0.
- During the fourth through sixth innings, both side's pitchers locked in and did not let one another score. In the fifth, Lesley found itself in a jam with runners on first and second with two outs. However, Owen Kalagher (Fairfield, Conn.) escaped the inning unscathed after he forced a ground out.
- Cairn tacked on another run in the seventh after a Will Wilkner RBI single made it 6-0. In the bottom half of the inning, Lesley cut the deficit in half (6-3), highlighted by an two-run RBI single that was scorched down the third base line off the bat of Kalagher. Earlier in the frame, Colin McCarthy (Rehoboth, Mass.) got the scoring started when he notched an RBI single.
- However, that would be the closest the Lynx would get as the Highlanders put the game out of reach thanks to a five-run eighth that included a Dylan Jackson triple that went off the top of the wall in right field. Cairn relief pitcher Jack Wright secured the win by retiring the Lynx in the bottom of the ninth for the 11-3 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GM 1)
- Kalagher led the offense Wednesday morning with two RBIs. He has now recorded at least two RBIs in back-to-back games.
- Cal Caruso (Sarasota, Fla.) and Caden Shott (Richmond, Calif.) both finished the day with two hits.
- Lesley starter Charles Ambroult (Quincy, Mass.) went 4.0 innings and allowed five runs while striking out three.
- Cairn's starting pitcher Joe Battaglia had a strong day on the mound going 6.0 innings while allowing just two hits and struck out six.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 2)
- Lesley opened the scoring in its second game Wednesday after Colby Jacobs (Charlton, Mass.) drew a bases-loaded walk for an early 1-0 lead. However in the bottom half of the first, the Gothic Knights recaptured the lead courtesy of a four-run inning highlighted by a two-run RBI from Brandon Piacenza that made it 2-1 at the time.
- Despite being down 4-1 going into the second, the Lynx had a four-run inning of their own and pulled back ahead 5-4. Colin McCarthy (Rehoboth, Mass.) drove in the go-ahead runs after he ripped a double down the right side.
- After the Lynx grabbed another run in the third thanks to a wild pitch, New Jersey City stormed ahead in the fourth courtesy of an eight-run frame to go up 12-6. Justin Moreno highlighted the Gothic Knights scoring in the fourth with a bases-clearing RBI double that brought in three runs, which made it 11-6 in the inning.
- Despite the large lead, Lesley mounted a rally in the sixth inning and cut the deficit to two (12-10). After James Brandon (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) drove in one run from an RBI double, Causso did the most damage for the squad courtesy of a two-run RBI triple to right, which made it 12-9 at the time.
- However, that would be the closest Lesley got as New Jersey City utilized a three-run bottom of the sixth to go ahead 15-10, and the Lynx's bats were shut down the rest of the way thanks to three strong innings from Gothic Knights reliever Andre Dean.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GM 2)
- Three different Lynx finished the day with multiple RBIs led by McCarthy's three followed by two from Causo and Jacobs.
- Piacenza led the Gothic Knights offense with four RBIs.
- Lesley finished the day with 12 hits and have now recorded 10+ hits in four of its first five games.
