THE LEAD – In the season opener doubleheader for the Lesley University baseball team, the Lynx split Sunday's doubleheader after falling in the first game, 17-8, but coming away with a 6-5 win in game two. Sunday's win also marked the first of head coach Cody Mercier

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 1)

  • In the first inning, the Quakers exploded for six runs to grab a quick lead highlighted by an RBI single up the middle from Gabe McDowell that brought in two, making it 3-0 at the time.
  • Later in the game, after Wilmington pushed its lead seven (9-2), the Lynx chipped away in the bottom half of the third thanks to a four-run inning (9-6). Justin Dennett (Fairfield, Conn.) highlighted the Lesley surge with a two-run RBI double.
  • However, Wilmington would pull back ahead and double up the Lynx (12-6) with a three-run fifth. In the final inning, the Quakers added five more runs, including a two-run RBI single from J.C. Calhoun. Despite being down 17-6 in the bottom of the seventh, the Lynx would get two more runs back thanks to a homer to right from James Brandon (Manhattan Beach, Calif.). Unfortunately, Wilmington would retire the next batter for the 17-8 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GM 1)

  • Brandon led the squad with three RBIs on the day.
  • Dennett and Owen Kalagher (Fairfield, Conn.) both had two hits in Sunday's opener.
  • McDowell and Avery Battle led the offense for the Quakers with three RBIs apiece.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 2)

  • Wilmington jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after one, but in the second, Raymond Morales (Naugatuck, Conn.) drove in the tying run courtesy of an RBI single past the shortstop. However, in the bottom of the third, the Quakers pulled back ahead by three (4-1) with RBIs from Battle and Hayden Koonce.
  • After scoring a run in the fourth made it 4-2, Lesley cut the deficit to one (4-3) in the fifth courtesy of a Colin McCarthy (Rehoboth, Mass.) RBI single to left.
  • Going into the seventh down one, Lesley pulled ahead (5-4), which was highlighted by an RBI double off the bat of Cal Caruso (Sarasota, Fla.) , who drove in the go-ahead run. Wilmington would not go quietly though as the Quakers evened things at five in the bottom of the seventh thanks to an RBI single from Evan Brauch.
  • In the eighth, the Lynx loaded the bases after Brandon drew a walk and the next at-bat saw Colby Jacobs (Charlton, Mass.) drive in the eventual game-winning run with a sacrifice fly to right. In the bottom half of the frame, Morales came in for his first appearance on the mound and retired the side for the 6-5 victory.
