THE LEAD – The Lesley University baseball team dropped a pair of tight non-conference games Sunday afternoon vs. Massachusetts Maritime Academy. The Lynx fell 4-3 in the first game of the double-dip before falling in the second game, 4-2, at Commodore Hendy Field.    

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 1)

  • After a scoreless first inning, the Buccaneers took a lead in the bottom of the second inning. Gorry drove in the first run on a single, plating Estrada for the first run after Estrada tripled earlier in the inning. Later in the inning, Leslie singled to right and scored Gorry from second to give the Bucs a 2-0 lead after two innings.
  • Neither team scored in the third and in the top of the fourth, Lesley erased the shut out and took the lead. Shott walked with the bases loaded and Samela singled to right to score Brandon and Jacobs. The Lynx led the Buccaneers after four innings, 3-2. 
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Freeman executed a squeeze bunt to score Weir from third and tied the game at 3-3. After Freeman, Pietrafesa singled to right center and scored Leslie to give Maritime a 4-3 advantage.
  • Kennedy did his job on the mound and shut down Lesley through the sixth and seventh and picked up the 4-3 win for Maritime in game one.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GM 1)

  • Jake Samela had two hits for the Lynx, Ian Dempsey recorded the teams third hit.
  • Caden Shott and Samela each had an RBI in the loss. 
  • Owen Kalagher, James Brandon, and Colby Jacobs all scored runs.
  • Kalagher, Brandon, and Dempsey all stole a base in the game.
  • Tucker Leslie and Aidan Weir each recorded three hits in the game for the Bucs. AJ Pietrafesa, Michael Estrada, Michael Logiudice and Bill Gorry all had one hit in the win. Pietrafesa's hit extended his hit streak to 19 games.
  • Leslie, Grady Freeman, and Gorry were all credited with RBIs. 
  • Leslie, Estrada, Gorry, and Weir each scored a run in the win.
  • Estrada recorded a triple, the only extra base hit in the game for the Bucs.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 2)

  • Lesley struck first in the top of the second on a McElroy sacrifice fly that scored Jacobs from third and gave Lesley a 1-0 lead through two innings.
  • The Lynx 1-0 lead lasted until the bottom of the fourth when the Buccaneers took the lead. Estrada doubled to score Vieira, Weir hit a sacrifice fly to center that scored Estrada, and on a wild pitch that walked Leslie, Logiudice scored from third to give the Bucs a 3-1 advantage after four.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, the Bucs added some insurance on another wild pitch from Lesley that allowed Pietrafesa to score from third base and give Maritime a 4-1 lead.
  • In the top of the sixth, Lesley plated one run but it wasn't enough as Dean was masterful on the mound to help earn the Bucs the 4-2 win in game two and a sweep of the Lynx.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Kevin Dorsey recorded two hits for the Lynx. Four other players had one hit apiece.
  • James Brandon and Christian McElroy both drove in a run.
  • Owen Kalagher and Colby Jacobs scored the runs for Lesley.
  • Kalagher had a double, the only extra base hit for the Lynx.
  • AJ Pietrafesa recorded two hits in the game to extend his hitting streak to 20 games. 
  • Tucker Leslie, Michael Estrada, and Michael Logiudice all had one hit in the win.
  • Estrada and Aidan Weir were credited with RBIs in the game.
  • Pietrafesa, Evan Vieira, Estrada, and Logiudice all scored a run.
  • Leslie and Estrada both had doubles for the two Bucs extra base hits in the game.

 UP NEXT

  • Lesley returns to action on Tuesday, March 26 for their home-opener vs. Framingham State University at 7:00 PM at Minuteman Vocation Technical HS.
  • Maritime is off until Friday when they will travel to Westfield to take on the Owls in their conference opener at 3:30pm.
