Clark, Lynx Knock Off Nighthawks in Rubber Game, 10-2; Take Season Series 2-1

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. – Junior Justin Clark's (Chino Hills, Calif.) first collegiate career homerun in the top the fifth swung momentum over to Lynx as they took the season series from Newbury College with a 10-2 victory, Sunday afternoon.

The Lynx took advantage of two Nighthawk miscues in the early innings to jump out to the 4-0 lead after two innings. Clark drove in first year Will Rhone (North Haven, Conn.) from third with sacrifice fly to leftfield. Moments later sophomore first baseman Ryan Pumphret (Shrewsbury, Mass.) scored the second Lynx run when Nighthawk starter Tim Brown (Orange, Conn.) uncorked a wild pitch to give the Lynx a 2-0 lead after one.

In the top of the second, sophomore rightfielder Gage Reycroft (Ft. Myers, Fla.) and sophomore shortstop Nicholas Ferragine (Randolph, N.J.) open the inning with back-to-back walks. The pair moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by first year backstop Brendan Fairchild (Temecula, Calif.) to bring the lineup back around to the top. Senior third baseman Mike Slaby (Foxborough, Mass.) grounded out to shortstop but in the back-door came Reycroft with the third run. Moments later Ferragine scored their fourth run on a passed ball.

Brown appeared to have settled down retiring the side in order in the top of the third and stranding a runner on second in the fourth to keep Newbury in the ballgame. The Nighthawks chipped their way back scoring once in the second and again in the fourth to cut the Lynx lead in half, 4-2.

But Clark squashed their momentum driving a fastball over the rightfield fence for a two-run homerun to take a 6-2 lead. The homerun re-ignited the Lynx offense as they nearly batted around in the top of the sixth to put upa crooked number four and put themselves on top 10-2.

Making his third start of the season, sophomore right-hander Nick DeGrenier (Marshfield, Mass.) took home the win tossing eight innings allowing two earned on seven hits while striking out three to improve to 3-0 on the season. Nighthawks' senior Tim Brown (Orange, Conn.) earned the loss after throwing five innings, allowing nine earned on eight hits with four strikeouts.

Lesley improves to 9-3 and 2-1 in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action while Newbury falls to 11-8 and 2-3 in the conference.  The Lynx carry on with a road game at Gordon College on Tuesday afternoon.
