WATERTOWN, Mass. – The Lesley University baseball team topped Newbury College, 5-2, in game one of Saturday afternoon's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) doubleheader before the rains came and halted game two in the third inning with the Lynx leading 10-0. Junior David Hersey (Wolfeboro, N.H.) went three-for-five with five RBIs and two doubles to give senior starter, southpaw Ryan Genua (Prospect, Conn.), his first win of the season.

Reigning NECC Pitcher of the Week Danny Lumb (Stoneham, Mass.) kept Lesley off the scoreboard for the first three innings while scattering just two base-hits. However, the Lynx got to the Stoneham, Mass. native the second time through the order.

Sandwiched in between two walks by senior right fielder Tyler Plourd (Canton, Conn.) and first year third baseman Mike Slaby (Foxboro, Mass.), senior first baseman Kevin Hopwood (Winter Haven, Fla.) roped a single to load the bases with no outs to open the top of the of the fourth. Hershey then cleared the bases lacing a three-run double. Lumb settled down and retired the next three batters to get out of the inning but the damage had already been done as the Lynx took a 3-0 advantage.

The Nighthawks finally got on the scoreboard an inning later in the home half of the fifth. First year middle infielders Brian Rhone (North Haven, Conn.) and C.J. Ingraham (Georgetown ,Mass.) opened the frame with back-to-back singles to turn the order back around to the top. After first year centerfielder Ian Hruniak (Lutz, Fla.) loaded the bases reaching on a fielder's choice, senior backstop David Dubay (Farmington, Conn.) drove in the first run lofting a sacrifice fly. Two batters later, junior third baseman Steven Broy (Gorham, Maine) came through in the clutch ripping a long two-out single into right centerfield. Ingraham came in to score the second Newbury run but Hruniak was thrown out on a perfectly executed relay to the plate for the final out of the inning to keep it a one-run game in favor of Lesley, 3-2.

Lesley grabbed an insurance run in the top of the sixth and another in the top of the seven to extend their lead to three runs but that was all the Lynx would need. Junior lefthander Ray Cohen (Coventry, Conn.) came on in relief of Genua to finish the game, tossing two innings while allowing just two hits and striking out two to earn his first save of the season.

Genua hurled five innings, yielding four hits and two runs while striking out two Nighthawk batters to pick up the win.

Hersey's offense was complimented by Hopwood who finished the day a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs scored.

With the win, the Lynx improve to 2-5 overall and 2-2 in NECC play while Newbury drops down to 2-2 in the conference and 8-7 overall.
